You can go from using the CD version to the online version, yes. When you go online to turbo tax, it will ask for your username and password. At that point, your old files will be available to you.
You will need to have your return saved as a .tax file to do so. Please see this Turbo Tax help article for more information.
How do I transfer last year's return into TurboTax Online?
@rjvanwey
Wellllllll...it's not exactly clear what everyone here is saying.
1) if you have your xxxxxxx.tax2021 datafile on your home computer...you can transfer that information into the Online 2022 tax return, but that's just for any information that needs to be carried over from last year's file to the new 2022 file.
2) You will not have any "Online" access to any tax returns you filed with teh CD/Desktop software prior to the new Online 2022 tax file you are creating now.
3) For all the prior years, created with the CD/Desktop softwre....you must keep your own copies of those tax files...they will not be available in the "Online" software. Make sure you create PDF files of each of those prior years on your home computer...AND BACK THEM UP Offline...USB flash drive...etc.
4) Computer disks crash...and then they are gone unless you save an off-computer backup (A printed copy of each year in a tax folder helps too).
________
Most of us who use Desktop software every year....would rarely use the Online version, other than to attempt to guide those who do. Give it a shot, but you may not like it.
