I want to know why TurboTax is charging me 80

TurboTax has 2 free products, but you are not in one of them.  You appear to be using Online Deluxe Edition, which is a paid version--$40 for Federal and $40 for state, and if you choose to pay out of your Federal refund, there is an additional $40 fee ($45 for California filers.)  If you chose that payment method, we can tell you how to remove the $40 refund processing fee and pay the remainder of the fees up front with credit/debit card.   I'll tell you about both free products below.

NOTE:  If you haven't already filed, you may be able to change editions.   If you have already paid/filed, then the following will not apply.

The regular Free Edition is for very simple returns and not everyone can use it.  Certain forms are not available in Free Edition and require an upgrade to Deluxe, such as one of Schedules 1-3, itemized deductions, etc.   Did you start in Free Edition and had to upgrade?    If you haven't already paid or registered, and if you are sure you don't need Deluxe, you can use the "Clear and Start Over" feature to choose Free Edition, but depending on the complexity of your return you may not be able to use regular Free Edition.  If you need to itemize deductions, for instance, or have one of the Schedules 1-3, etc., you won't be able to use it.   See this FAQ on some situations where one cannot use Free Edition:

The other free product (TurboTax IRS Free File Program) is fully-featured and can prepare all the usual forms and schedules.  It is even more powerful than Deluxe, if you qualify.  But one has to meet one of the qualifications to use.  See below:

To qualify for free 2019 federal and state tax returns through the IRS Free File Program delivered by TurboTax, you just need to meet one of these requirements:

      • Your 2019 household AGI is $36,000 or less;
      • You qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC); or
      • In 2019, you served as active duty military (including Reservists and National Guard) with a maximum AGI of $69,000, and you have a military-issued W-2.

If you qualify for that program and want to use it, see these 2 FAQs:

Deluxe online edition for a federal tax return - $40

And you added a State tax return when using the Deluxe edition or higher - $40

Or you chose the Option to pay the TurbTax account fees with the federal tax refund - service charge $40

See this TurboTax support FAQ for removing fees - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/charges-and-fees/help/what-can-i-do-to-reduce-my-fees/01/26051

OR -

If you have not paid for the online edition you are using, have not filed your tax return or registered the Free edition, then you can clear your return and start over with a lower priced edition. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the program screen while working on the 2019 online tax return. Click on Clear & Start Over.

OR -

IRS Free File Program - https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/
If you are eligible you can use the TurboTax Free File Program which is free to file both a federal and state tax return. The Free File Program edition is a full featured personal tax program and on a separate website from the TurboTax online editions.

To qualify for free 2019 federal and state tax returns with the Free File Program, you'll need to meet at least one of these requirements:

  • A maximum 2019 adjusted gross income (AGI) of $36,000; or
  • You qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC); or
  • You served as active duty military (including Reservists and National Guard) with a maximum 2019 AGI of $69,000 (you'll also need a military-issued W-2).

I want to know why TurboTax is charging me 80

It says that 40 is for fed,40 is for state. I used the free service so I should not have been charged. I live in Texas, there is no state tax here.

Please explain

Well they tell you that till the end after you already filled everything out.

I had the same problem.  I purchased TT from Walmart,  received a free Federal filing, paid for the State filing and their protection package.   A few months later I received  an email  indicating that $80 was being deducted from my account  for online software.  This is absurd a d fraudulent  to take money out of someone's  account that already paid all fees.  Their customer service is terrible and useless.  I will not be using this service this year.  It's like they are scammers.

@Thecreative1us

Sounds like you BOUGHT the cd or downloaded version at the store but then used the ONLINE version instead AND  asked for the TT fees to be withheld from the federal refund  AND then the refund was late in arriving so the fees were withheld from your bank account.

Why would you agree to pay the fees again if you had already paid them ?    If you had asked last year, before you filed the return,  then we would have told you how to avoid the second fees but now it is too late to correct that error.
