You can change your version of TurboTax Online by using the Clear and Start Over option so that you can start over in the version of TurboTax that you want. However, there could be a reason that you need TurboTax Self Employed version, such as if you have a 1099-MISC. See the TurboTax FAQ below for more information on who is considered self employed.

I have not been self employed for over 5 years. I still get the 1099-MISC for SIDE JOBS. That should not make a difference.
When I started my turbo tax return a month or so ago, it did NOT say self-employed. It does now, on April 14, 2020, the day before taxes are due.
Seems like a scam of bait and switch. If I truly have to enter all of my taxes again like the help menu says I do; I will not be doing it in TubroTax. I felt Turbotax did another scam last year when pushing the identity then plan. It would not let me finish without purchasing it. I found a way around it, but seriously!! Just say the fee is $100 or $1000, or whatever, but why change it and make it hard? Nickle and diming!
SOOOO IRRITATED!
Side jobs and 1099Misc IS self employment income.
You can enter Self Employment Income into Online Deluxe or Premier but if you have any expenses you will have to upgrade to the Self Employed version.
How to enter income from Self Employment
Or There is also The Turbo Tax Free File program which is free for federal and state. And has more forms than the Federal Free Edition, like Schedules A, B, C , D, E, F, EIC, H, K-1, SE, etc.
To qualify for the Free File website you just need to meet one of these 3 things.
AGI $36,000 or less.
Active duty military with AGI of $69,000 or less
OR qualify for EIC (earned income credit.)
In order to use the Free File program, you have to start it at a special website. Try signing in at the top right.

" I still get the 1099-MISC for SIDE JOBS. "
If you enter a 1099-Misc with an amount in box 7, TurboTax (TT) is going to treat that as self employment, unless you tell it otherwise. Before upgrading, it will ask you if you want to upgrade.
As an aside, why do you think these side gigs are not self employment?
The IRS considers anything in box 7 of 1099-MISC to be self employment income. TurboTax (TT) aggressively steers you in that direction, even if the amount is in box 3. If you try reporting box 7 income as anything else, you chances of hearing from the IRS are very high. Any work you do that is in anywhere close to your normal line of work, is self employment, no matter how small the job.

Makes no sense. It is less than 1% of what I made and there are no write-offs. Whatever. I need to get this done.
NOW, I cant pay with a check. I can charge $10,000 on a credit card.
Grumpy. I'm paying taxes. :( Found the option to pay taxes by check. It was the turbotax that only accepted credit cards.
Happened to me, I'm not self employed did not select anything stating to use this product to file self employed, etc etc. Turbotax gives filing options at the very start when you answer a couple of TurboTax questions... I selected Free-File.
What now?
The online forum I was guided thru was strictly W-2 filing of 1040
TurboTax also has another free product called the Free File Edition (not to be confused with the regular Free Edition). It has free Federal preparation and free State preparation. There is no efiling fee. It is not available after October 15
The Free file Edition can handle a 1099-MISC.
The Free file Edition is more fully-featured than the regular Free Edition. The Free File Edition can prepare Schedule A, C, D, E, and F that the Free Edition cannot.
For Free File Edition a user needs to meet only ONE of these qualifications:

It does that to me every year. I have worked abroad and own a rental property so recieve a 1099-MISC. I just assume they're getting kickbacks from the government on the penalties they say you have to pay for not having paid quarterly taxes. Once they've f'ed you into "self-employed," you're screwed. I've tried repeatedly to start over using Premier (which would be the correct one for me) but immediately f's me in self-employed. More money for turbotax in fees from me and kickbacks they get for unowed penalties they can collect. I used to just put up with is because it was too much hassle finding a CPA abroad or even one stateside that knew how to deal with UN income. But, definitely time to find a competent CPA and stop overpaying to have my taxes done incorrectly by Turbotax.
For the last 10 years I have owned rental property and used Turbo Tax deluxe or Premier. Last year I was switched to self- employed which I am not. Turbo Tax agent said he couldn't change the software, but to file a complaint after filing taxes. I did that and received a refund. This year again i can not get out of self employed status. What does on here?????
If you need to downgrade to a lower version, you can follow the instructions here to clear and start over.
If you need a refund, you will need to contact customer support by clicking here. @bcucchiara.
Similar problem here. After spending hours entering my information, it seems I need to erase everything and start over in order to remove the "self employed" filing issue... no guarantee that will even fix the issue though because what will prevent it from happening again? This should be an easy toggle button or dropdown menu like all of the rest of the tool, there is no reason for the change to require hours more work on the customer's side. If this isn't fixed I won't have the TIME to refile with turbotax and will need to take my business elsewhere. Thumbs up if you want intuit to fix this issue!
Clearing and starting over isn't a solution - that's basically telling customers there is no solution. Additionally, there is no assurance that this will even solve the issue as many users are having this glitchy "filing category change" added arbitrarily anyway. Redoing hours of work for a paying customer is entirely unprofessional and will cost intuit many faithful customers.
If you want to use a lower version without losing your entries, one thing you can do is move your Online file to a lower Desktop program and continue without paying for Online or needing to reenter your info. All the Desktop programs have the same forms. You just get more help and guidance in the higher versions. Plus the Desktop programs have several more features over online.
To continue in the desktop version see this…….
After you get the program installed the first thing to do before you open your tax return .tax file is to update the program and install any state programs you had. Then open your file. So you first might need to start a fake return to be able to download the state program (go to FILE - NEW).
You can buy the CD/Download here,
