eFile Problem - Last Year AGI

IRS rejects my efile because it does not recognize the AGI
amount from 2019 1040 --SR return, but that amount is correct and comes directly from that return.

On your 2019 tax return, your AGI is on line 8b of the Form 1040.

When e-filing your return for the current year, use the AGI from the prior year's originally filed accepted return.

The current return will reject if the amended AGI amount is used. Do not use amounts from an amended return, a corrected amount from a math error notice, or a changed amount from the IRS.

If your previous year tax returns are not available, you can use the IRS Get Transcript tool. Try the online option first. If you are unable to obtain the transcript online, you can have one sent to the address the IRS has on record for you. You can find IRS Get Transcript here.

Finally, the last resort is to mail your tax return.  TurboTax will print an instruction sheet explaining where to mail the returns.

To mail your Individual Income Tax Return please review the following:

Completing your Return

  • Do not staple or attach your check, W-2s or any other documents to your return.
  • Submit proper documentation (schedules, statements and supporting documentation, including W-2s, other states’ tax returns, or necessary federal returns and schedules).
  • Use the correct form - forms differ by tax type and tax year.  Look at the bottom of the form for the required pages to submit.
  • Double-check your return.
  • Review personal information (social security number (SSN), address, date of birth) on your return for each person listed
  • Sign your return.
  • Taxpayers must sign and date their returns
  • Both spouses must sign the joint return, even if there was only one income reported
  • Mail your return, payment, and all necessary documentation to the appropriate address listed on the return.

I'm having the same problem.  I even requested an IRS transcript to verify our 2019 AGI.

They all match, but our return was still rejected 😞

I filed a joint return last year. Turbo Tax is asking for last years AGI for me and my wife separately. The AGI on my tax return shows a joint AGI. How do I break it out or do I put the same amount in both?

Since you filed the 2019 tax return as Married Filing Jointly, the 2019 AGI is the same for the both of you.

My TurboTax e-fining was initially rejected because "Last year AGI" did not match what IRS had on record, even though my last year AGI input matched exactly the amount shown on my IRS.gov report.

I later discovered that you must enter "0" as the last year AGI if you meet one of the conditions (we filed after November 10th), instead of the actual last year AGI. So I put Last year AGI of "0", and the TurboTax e-file was accepted.

So my daughter was married last year and her and her husband filed joint.  They mailed in their return. This year, when trying to efile, they are each asked to supply the AGI, but their joint AGI was rejected.  There is no individual AGI to report, so how can they efile?

thanks

Meg

The IRS probably does not have their 2020 AGI in the database.

Have them enter a 0 (zero) for the 2020 AGI and e-file the 2021 tax return again.
