Does the 2024 Deluxe download version include Schedule D Capital Gains and Losses

I have capital losses which I need to claim. Each year I import the previous years Turbo Tax tax files which include my Capital Loss Carryover.

Does the 2024 Deluxe download version include Schedule D which will include the carryover in my 2024 return?

Thank you very much for your help.

Every version of the desktop software includes all forms and all schedules, including Schedule D.   You get more help with some of those schedules if you upgrade to Premier or Home and Business.

All the TurboTax 2024 desktop editions available for download include Schedule D.

If your 2023 return has a Carryover worksheet and you transfer the 2023 tax data to the 2024 return the carryover will transfer.

Does the 2024 Deluxe download version include Schedule D Capital Gains and Losses

I am trying to file my 2024 taxes, went through all the reviews & this came up --

To accurately complete your taxes, you need to upgrade to TurboTax Premium
Why do I need to upgrade?
You have Capital Gains or Losses (Schedule D).
TurboTax Deluxe does not cover this situation

I did not have to upgrade for 2023 or 2022.

The posted responses say Schedule D is included, so why do I have to upgrade?

@lmlomonte You are reading replies that pertain to the desktop download software.   The forms and schedules you can enter using online Deluxe are not all the same.  Since you are using online, you are being prompted to upgrade to Premium.

Because in 2022 and 2023 you were using the TurboTax desktop software installed on your computer.  For tax year 2024 you are using the TurboTax online web-based editions where the Deluxe online edition does not support investment sales reported on a Schedule D.  You would have to upgrade to the Premium online edition for Schedule D.

Why did you select to use the TurboTax online editions for tax year 2024 instead of the TurboTax desktop editions?

Does the 2024 Deluxe download version include Schedule D Capital Gains and Losses

I encountered identical problems with my 2024 TurboTax Deluxe download version from Amazon.

I encountered identical problems with my 2024 TurboTax Deluxe download version from Amazon.

I will tell "xmasbaby0" and   "DoninGA"  why I didn't buy my usual TTax desktop version from Amazon --  BECAUSE I WAS INFORMED THAT THE DISC/CD VERSION WAS NO LONGER AVAILABLE...  AND. . .  I was led to believe that the download version was the same as I have been using for the past 4-5 years....

If TurboTax is this duplicitous (or was it Amazon?) in dealing with its returning customers, what other deceptive practices are they capable of???     I really wanted a CD version, so I investigated several other Tax Prep software packages and came very close to selecting a new supplier.     My eyes have been opened. . .WIDE.

Starting for 2024 tax returns they only sell the Desktop program as a download.  Sorry no more CDs.   And I think it’s the same for all the tax companies.   Why do you need the CD?

The Download program is EXACTLY the same Desktop program as the CD.  You buy it the same way directly from Turbo Tax or in stores like Costco or Amazon.   When you installed the CD you still had to go online to update it.   It's only the method you use to install it.    Even when I bought the CD I used the download method to install it. But last year for 2023 I bought the download from Costco online.  Installed it real fast. It was the same as the CD.  Most of the laptops and computers now don't have a CD drive.  And I had to get a new laptop with Windows 10 to run Turbo Tax starting for 2022.  You can copy the download installation file to a CD or to a thumb usb drive.

The confusion people have is that the Online version is NOT the Download Desktop program.

Since you now have to log into an Intuit Account all your downloads and licenses are listed there (even if you bought it from somewhere else) so if you need to download to install it again or install on another computer, even on the other operating system (Windows, Mac). Andy the download will have all the updates to date.

Does the 2024 Deluxe download version include Schedule D Capital Gains and Losses

In late 2024, I opened a brokerage account that generated a small amount of capital gains from mutual funds in December.  Answered appropriate questions on Turbo Tax, then imported the brokerage 1099, and the Deluxe version of Turbo Tax completed the Schedule D properly.  I paid my TurboTax fee for deluxe (including state return), and printed the returns.  I can file manually at this time.  However, I got the message from TurboTax that my return is not complete, and I must upgrade to Premium version for another $129 to handle the capital gains.  Can't file electronically, and Turbo Tax will think the return was never filed if I sign and file manually.  My question is if I do not upgrade this year, will Turbo tax download all my 2024 data so I can file the 2025 return next year.  Not sure if I am on desktop or online, but can change next year if necessary.

I always had Schedule D transactions AND have used Turbo Tax Deluxe (CD version from Amazon) for past 4-5 years without a problem.  Tax year 2024 everything changed.  CD version was no longer available (no mention of a change in the software), so I ordered the download version.   That's how I learned that Sch D was out-of-scope for 2024 Deluxe and would need to upgrade to Premier Version - BUT I had already been charged for the 2024 Deluxe version.   I don't have a problem with upgrading to "Premier for Investments & Rental Properties" >>> as long as I only have to pay the difference in price between the two versions (which in my case amounts to $27.00).   Otherwise this a major scam on the part of Turbo Tax.  I should have been informed about the change in the scope of the new Deluxe version BEFORE I purchased it - definitely fraudulent advertising.

You also have been scammed - especially since it accepted your brokerage transactions AND prepared a correct tax return for both Fed & State.  The Turbo Tax software has been getting a lot of feedback from many unhappy (angry?) customers.  Why should you (and me) have to pay for TWO different versions because they produced a software product riddled with BUGS?    You can still use TTax for 2025 (if you so choose).  It's the same as if you are a first-time customer.   BUT TTax needs to step up to plate and resolve these software problems they alone are responsible for ! ! !

Does the 2024 Deluxe download version include Schedule D Capital Gains and Losses

I came to this thread, having the same original question. After seeing the first couple of responses from November, I thought indeed that the desktop version downloaded Turbo Tax Deluxe will handle Schedule D and I will be able to file that without an issue. But, as the later responses show, that is not true. It does not matter whether you use downloaded version or online Turbotax filing option; in both cases, Deluxe version will not let you file taxes with Schedule D, unless you print it out and file in manually. You have to pay $35 more for the Premier software, even if you do not need anything else, for filing online the same form. And, the filing fees have gone up too, over the years.

You don't need to upgrade to file your Schedule D reporting Capital Gains, you can Efile with Deluxe.  If you downloaded the program, and open it with a TurboTax icon on your desktop, you have TurboTax Desktop.  If you go online and Sign In each time you use the program, you're using TurboTax Online.  If you're getting the message that you need to upgrade, you must be using the online version.  In the desktop version, your state download is included, but you do pay for Efiling your state.

You can transfer your return to the desktop version. Here's How to Transfer from TurboTax Online to TurboTax Desktop.  I would suggest you Contact TurboTax Support and use 'Billing' as your phone option.  Explain that you would like to switch from online to desktop, and pay the small difference in price from what you've already paid, and they'll send you a download.  You can use the Deluxe desktop version; you won't have to upgrade.

@patc135 @ray_a_k   Yes the Desktop Deluxe is still the same and has Schedule D and investments and all the forms.   What has happened since they stopped selling the CD and only the download is that people are getting confused and ending up in the Online version instead of the Desktop program, even if they bought the Desktop download.  Then when they get to the end they are surprised that they have to pay for Online.

In the Online version you do need to upgrade to Premium to enter investments.    Premium is the new version in Online.  It combines Premier and the Self Employed version.  It is still called Premier in the Desktop program.

Does the 2024 Deluxe download version include Schedule D Capital Gains and Losses

What happened in my case is that I tried to use the download version of Turbotax deluxe as I have for the last 7 years, but this year Turbotax made it such that the download version is only compatible with Macbooks from 2018 or newer (ie you must have the Ventura MacOS instead of Monterey MacOS. My computer won't run with Ventura). So I went through my entire tax return using the online Turbo tax Deluxe version, thinking it was the same as the download, and there was no mention during that ENTIRE process that I would have to upgrade and pay for Premium to submit Schedule D. However, only at the very end do they tell you this. AND, this is not to mention the download including state return was $60 total. The online price for federal and state is $203. Give me a braek. This is a scam and I am pissed. You've lost me as a customer Turbotax. This is shady BS.
