Turbo Tax doesn't allow me to enter my property tax in 2024

This is still an issue as of 1/27/25. I just loaded TurboTax last week and have updated to the latest. Never have had such an error in the software and NO WAY to Contact someone who is in support to get it fixed! Seriously we are on a Community Chat! Hope someone on here is from support to get this fixed.

@Sailbyyou This is a know problem.  See this TurboTax support FAQ and sign up to be notified when this problem is fixed - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/mortgage-loan/enter-property-taxes-paid/...

Turbo Tax doesn't allow me to enter my property tax in 2024

I have the same problem reported problem 2 weeks ago. Was told to wait for next update Thurs. Jan 23. Update didn't fix this problem.  Since the ability to file is coming up, I would think that they would fix this standard item.  I see some do not have the problem.  Is there a listing of known bugs?

Turbo Tax doesn't allow me to enter my property tax in 2024

It's not really a FAQ, it's one line:

"Some TurboTax Desktop customers who have both mortgage and non-mortgage property taxes paid that they need to report, may experience an issue when entering 1098 first, and non-mortgage property taxes paid afterward in Credits and Deductions. "

I'll repeat that this does not describe what I'm seeing. I did not try to enter the 1098 first. I did not even have my 1098 yet when I tried to enter the real estate taxes.

@Nickbkeenan

I agree, has little or nothing to do with the 1098.

I hit the same problem with no 1098 in the tax file for several years.

_____________

But, the solution I posted above "should" still work.

And, the software team still needs to fix it for all the people who don't see this.

Software updates usually come out on Wed or Thursday nights, so don't expect it to be fixed (if you don't use my workaround) until you install software updates at the end of the week.

Turbo Tax doesn't allow me to enter my property tax in 2024

I'm having the same issue. I have input my main house but I have a couple other properties to input. Every time I go to the Property tax section, it tells me that it has everything and the standard deduction is my best route. It will not give me the ability to input the remaining property tax that I have.

Try going to the form, next to the box is a "plus" sign or something like that, click on that and it opens a worksheet. I use this to enter multiple lines.  Give it a try

This works…it is what I did after several days waiting for an update.  Just miffed that such a common entry for plain old property tax doesn’t work.  I’m using TurboTax for Home and Business.  I only have one entry to make. Thanks.

I reported the property tax entry problem to a Turbo Tax support person on Thursday 1/23. It's still not fixed

So I'm hoping this gets to multiple people.  I originally posted my concerns about not being able to add property taxes for land I have.

Someone posted to make modifications in the forms page.  Look for Interest section.   I did that and manually entered my property tax amounts.   If you look at the instructions it only allows a maximum of $10K.  Mine in total was over $12k.  So manually adding in more didn't help me.   I think this is why we are all getting that generic 'you've reached $10k error message'.    Turbotax should fix this but the outcome may be the same.  I checked my 2023 turbotax and it had the same logic.

@mushingirl   There is a max 10,000 limit (5,000 MFS) of property tax and state taxes "SALT".   SALT is State And Local Tax.   Which includes property tax, any state tax paid like for last year’s return and includes any state withholding from your W2s and any 1099s you have.   And any taxes in W2 box 14 and 19 like SDI or VDI.   You can only deduct up to 10,000 (5,000 MFS) for SALT State and Local Taxes.

Thanks.  That's what I just said.

Note too that you can only use the property tax section for two personal use properties up to the SALT amount which as noted also includes any state and local taxes paid via payroll and other things.

What's frustrating to me is my state allows deductions of taxes paid to other states, with no limit. I have a second home in another state. So the SALT cap is an issue for my federal taxes, but not my state taxes. So basically I can't do state taxes until this is fixed.

Thank you taxes4Vito. I did as you suggested and it worked going to the Form/Worksheet allows you to enter the data.

For those of you with this problem do the following: Toolbar select "View", now select Forms. Window opens titled "Forms in my Return". Scroll down to the form "Tax & Int Wks" and select. To enter Real Estate Taxes Paid, scroll down to section 2.b. Click on the cell in the right column and it will highlight the cell and add a Plus Symbol (+)  to the left. Click on the + and Supporting Details dialogue box will appear that will allow you to enter your payments. I have two separate payments 6 months apart that are different amounts. You enter data in and it will add the sum for you. Close dialogue box and now data. You can now go back to "View" in Toolbar and select "Step-by-Step" and verify that what you added which now shows up on the "Your 2024 Deductions and Credits" under "Property Taxes"

Good Luck Everyone!
