Credit for Other Dependents

Hello.  The $500 tax credit for other dependents is not being applied to reduce the amount of taxes owed for 2021, even though when I entered the information for the dependent TT responded with "good news! X qualified you for a tax break."  I received the credit last year and also satisfy all the criteria for this year.  Please help me figure out how to get the credit to show up.

Look at your tax return Form 1040 Line 19, the $500 Other Dependent credit will be entered if the dependent is eligible for the credit.

Look at the actual form 1040 ... do you see the $500 on line 19?  What is the amount on line 18?

How do I preview my TurboTax Online return before filing?

You can view your entire return or just your 1040 form before you e-file:

  1. Open or continue your return.
  2. Select Tax Tools in the left menu (if you don't see this, select the menu icon in the upper-left corner).
  3. With the Tax Tools menu open, you can then:
    • Select Print Center and then Print, Save, or Preview This Year's Return to preview your entire return, including all forms and worksheets (you may be asked to register or pay first).
    • View only your 1040 form by selecting Tools. Next, select View Tax Summary in the pop-up, then Preview my 1040 in the left menu.

No, the credit is not showing on line 19.  It is blank.

No, it does not appear on line 19.  The amount on line 18 is the total tax I owe.

Then look at the first page of the Form 1040 in the Dependents box.  Is there a check mark for the dependent in the box Credit for other dependents

I'm having the same issue!

TT is showing checks for qualifying for the credits but it doesn't get entered on the 1040??

Has anyone answered this?

The boxes are checked on my 1040 but the credit isn't entered on line 19.

The credit for Other Dependents is a non-refundable credit.  This means, if you do not have any tax liability on line 16, you will not receive the credit for other dependents.  This credit can only reduce the amount of your tax liability on line 16.

Understood. The problem is, I do have a tax liability online 16. I looked at old tax returns and when the credit for other dependence is checked I do get the credit online 19.

Line 17 is blank and line 18 shows the same amount as line 16

I figured out that the issue has to do with Schedule 8812.  There is a box between lines 12 and 13 having to do with the "principal place of abode."  TT Easy Step did not ask the questions, so the boxes are blank.  If you go straight to the schedule, you can answer them.  The credit will show up on the 1040 afterwards.  Not sure why this box has anything to do with "other dependents" since the questions pertain mostly to advance child tax credit payments.

OK, I’ll check that out. One concern though, if I “correct” the form, doesn’t TT prevent you from eFiling?
