TurboTax e-filing fees for State is misleading, $25 instead of $20 as mentioned in software

No one in the user forum can refund your $5 to you.  We are just other users like you who volunteer here to answer tax questions.

No one in the user forum can resolve a billing issue.  If you have a question about your TurboTax fees or billing, make sure you use the word “billing” in your request for help.  Do not use the word “refund.”

@mazink @VolvoGirl This problem was reported to the TurboTax Moderators on 09/10.  They forwarded it to the investigation team on 09/12.  Hopefully this issue will be fixed on the next software release, maybe as soon as 09/21.

Every March the early prices expire and increase. In the Desktop CD/Download program the State Efile fee is $20 but increases to 25.  But there will be a delay in Desktop program between March 1 when the price goes up and the next time the program update comes out, usually on Thursdays. It will show the $20 price but you be charged 25.

If it's still showing $20, I don't know why.  They might have forget to update that this year.  But after the first year or two you will know to expect it.

I think it's an issue because the image shown by the program appears to be an image object rather than a dynamic object--in other words, a picture showing the price rather than a picture with a blank price into which the current price is inserted.  (And probably 40+ pictures if they have one for each state.)  Possibly the pictures have not been updated, or they accidentally reverted to a previous version during a recent update.

I would be curious to know if this is an issue in all versions of Turbotax (online, Mac desktop and PC desktop) or only one specific version.  (I have a guess about that...)

For whatever it's worth, I agree that you should be charged the price shown, even if the current price in the commerce system is different because the image wasn't updated.  But that is something you will have to take up with customer service, we have no access and no authority to do anything about it.

This issue has been corrected with the 09/21/2023 update to the software.

There's no charge if you download it anywhere (instead of using the desktop version) or just NY?

Download and desktop mean the same thing.   With every version of the desktop software there is a fee to e-file a state tax return EXCEPT for New York.  There will not be a state e-file fee for a NY state return.

With Turbotax Online, e-filing a state return is included in the price for state return preparation (about $40 per state).

With the Desktop version (installed on your own computer, no matter where it comes from) one state preparation module is included in the price, so Turbotax has decided they will charge a little extra for state e-filing.  The Desktop version still ends up being slightly cheaper than filing Online if you have one tax return to file, and substantially cheaper than online if you have 2 or more returns to file.

It should really say "THE FILING FEE FOR TURBO TAX HOME AND BUSINESS IS $25.00 AN TURBO TAX ADVANTAGE IS $20.00.

This is the same kind of thing happening with Quickbooks Online.  Now if you have the cheapest plan no more backup with no one telling you!  To get back up you have to pay $117.00 a month now!

You would think that since every time you launch turbo tax it forces you do the updates.  The updates should have included changing the fee to $25.

To e-file the state return, you pay a fee of $20---which increases to $25 on March 1.   You can avoid the state e-file fee if you print and mail the state. TurboTax early bird pricing typically increases on that date.

We at Intuit TurboTax want our users to be completely delighted with their experience using our products and services, and successful in their financial lives and businesses.
