Schedule K-1 not carried over to State Tax Return

I'm filing both Federal Tax return and Mass tax return for a mass residents Trust. The trust distributed all the income (including capital gains). I thought Mass Tax return will know the trust distributed the income. But I was wrong because I noticed Mass tax return charged the trust on the income that has been distributed to beneficiaries. This happened to 2019 return and 2020 return. Please help me to amend the tax return.

The amended returns can be completed soon, use the link below to help get you started.  Once you begin, you can add more questions here if you are unable to correct the Massachusetts (MA) return. Our experts can respond to assist you.

2020: It's best to wait until your return is fully processed before completing an amendment.

2019: You should be able to begin your amendment when you are ready for the prior year.

Schedule K-1 not carried over to State Tax Return

There is a problem with doing MA trust taxes in the TurboTax Business product.  I three pass-through trusts that I'm doing taxes for.  The Federal works fine and can be filed.  However, none of the distributions to the beneficiary flow through to the MA state return.  The only "work around" was discussed with a TurboTax tax lawyer who advised me to manually put the dividends and cap gain distributions on lines 7 & 17 on Form 2.  However, I can't e-file because of TT flagging the % income being an invalid number on the Schedule B/R.  The error is that the "Percent of income must be between 0.000000 and 1.000000 for electronic filing".  It won't allow 100% which is the correct amount for the single beneficiary.  I spent almost 2 hours on the phone yesterday with TT support about the issue.  They refused to acknowledge that it was a problem with the product.  They kept saying to talk to the IRS or MA state tax officials.  Finally the representative was going to "elevate" the problem since tech support kept dodging the issue.  However, I was then disconnected after another long hold :-(.

I guess we should ask for a refund of the cost of the software since it is 2023 and this issue still isn't fixed.

Schedule K-1 not carried over to State Tax Return

I found a problem while trying to add addition and subtration adjustments to the MO State Tax Return for estate K-1's that where part of my Federal Return.  The Turbotax Software came back and said that I had not entered (even though I had) any K-1's in my Federal tax return, so any addition or subtaction adjustments do not apply. For some reason it would not recognize my Federal K-1 input. I found a work around to this problem.  When asked if I had addition or subtraction adjustments for the State return, instead of checking the "K-1" box I check the "Others" box and put in the appropriate description (from my K-1 documents) in the blank box for the adjustments or subtractions such as "Fiduciary" and the appropriate amount in the adjacent amount box.  This then put the adjustments in the proper place on my actual State Return form.

Schedule K-1 not carried over to State Tax Return

The problem still exists in 2024.  The problem is specific to the Turbo Tax Business product, not the one for doing personal taxes.  TurboTax still fails to carry over the schedule K-1 distribution deductions to the state return for the trust.  I have to manually go into the Massachusetts state tax forms and put in the distribution numbers so MA doesn’t tax the income that was already distributed to beneficiaries.  I have to do this for each of the MA trusts that I do taxes for.

I continue to report this problem EVERY year yet TurboTax still hasn’t cared enough to even reply/acknowledge that the bug in their software exists!!
