I need to amend my state return

In TurboTax, you can amend your state return without filing an amendment for your federal. Select your version for instructions:

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account if you're not already signed in.
  2. Under Your tax returns & documents (you may need to scroll down or select Tax Home first), select Show to open a list of options.
  3. Select 2020 and select Amend (change) return, then Amend using TurboTax Online.
  4. Select the reason you’re amending and continue.
  5. Answer the questions about your federal return, even if they don't apply. You'll eventually get to the screen Let's get started on your state taxes.
  6. Keep going and we'll present you with the option to amend. In some states, this appears right at the beginning; in others, it appears towards the end of the state interview.
  7. When finished, we'll provide printing and filing instructions for the amendment. Your state may take several months to process it.

Keep in mind: When you start amending, it's normal and expected for your refund meter to reset to $0. We'll calculate any additional refund or taxes owed when you're finished amending. This amount, if any, is separate from the amount on your originally filed return.

  1. Locate and open your return in the desktop software, if you don't already have it open.
  2. Select Check for Updates from the Online menu (Windows) or TurboTax menu (Mac) to ensure you're working with the latest version.
  3. Go to the Federal Taxes tab (or Personal if using Home & Business) and then select Other Tax Situations.
  4. On the Other Tax Situations screen, scroll down to Other Tax Forms and select Start next to Amend a return.
  5. Continue past the We'll help you change (amend) your return screen.
  6. Answer Yes to Did you already file your return?, select the reason for amending, and Continue.
  7. On the What do you need to change on your return? screen, scroll down to State return and select Update.
  8. Keep going and we'll present you with the option to amend. In some states, this appears right at the beginning; in others, it appears towards the end of the state interview.
