IRS says I didn't file in 2018. Trying to open my 2018 turbotax file and it says it needs to install Colorado state, but then it errors out with a "Hmm... it looks like we’ve hit a slight snag" message.
How do I download 2018 CO state taxes?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
TurboTax does not support tax year 2018 so there are no state programs that can be downloaded.
Go to this Colorado website for tax year 2018 state income tax forms and instructions - https://tax.colorado.gov/2018-individual-income-tax-forms
Did you use the CD/download or online TurboTax to prepare a 2018 return? And.....who is saying you did not file 2018? The IRS deals with federal tax returns. Your state deals with a CO return. Is the state saying you did not file a return or are they saying you did not pay your 2018 state tax due? Your only proof that you paid 2018 would be your own bank or credit card records. TurboTax never knows how, when or even if you paid the tax due.
The IRS and TurboTax save returns for seven years---then they are purged. If you know the exact account and user ID you used when you prepared the return, you need to go to that account. BUT.....the system is about to transition from 2022 returns to 2023 software (which becomes available in late Nov/early Dec)--and one thing you have to do is "start" a new return --- (you do not have to finish it) --just enter enough to get the side menu to open up.. Since the October 16 deadline, online is closed for starting new returns. So you can try-----but in actuality you may have to wait for the 2023 software to open up in order to gain access to your old returns.
You have to access your own account and/or print it for yourself using exactly the same account and user ID that you used when you prepared the return.
Start a 2022 return online and enter some personal information so that the menu on the left opens up and lets you access your past year returns.
Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them. Log out of the account you are in now.

Or did you use the desktop version of TurboTax? If so, the files are on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive.

SAVE YOUR TAX RETURN !
EVERY year before mid-October you should save a copy of your tax return as a pdf and print a copy of it for your records. That way you will not be searching online frantically when you need it for a lender, FAFSA forms, your next tax return, etc.

NOTE: TurboTax and the IRS save return for seven years. Returns older than seven years are purged.
Thanks for the info xmasbaby. I used the downloaded version, not online TT. The IRS says I didn't file in 2018. I have a copy of my return saved on my computer on my own hard drive, and I'm trying to open it with TT 2018. However, when I go to open it, it says it needs to download CO state. I don't need the CO state add on, but TT won't open my federal 2018 return without trying to download CO state. That's where it gets the weird "hmmm something went wrong" error and won't go any further.
I looked for previous years returns by trying to start a 2022 return, but it just takes me to the page to order 2023. Plus, I don't think they have a copy of my previous years returns since I don't do them online.
Also, I have just one TT account that I use every year.
So, if there is a way to open my 2018 TT file without downloading CO state, then I need to know what that is. If not, and TT won't open without having the state version installed as well, then I need to know how to do that.
So, wait....You are trying to get to your 2018 federal return to send it to the IRS? The IRS is saying you did not file 2018? Is the IRS saying that you owe tax due for 2018? And you cannot get the desktop software to open because it wants you to download the state, too?
If you prepared your return using the CD/download, it is not stored in an online account; it is only stored on your own hard drive or any back up device you used. All of that stuff about starting a new 2022 return is for users who used online software---which is not your situation.
Not sure why the software is prompting you to download the state software -- presumably you already downloaded the state software when you prepared the tax return. It is now too late to download it again--TT no longer supports the 2018 software. You should try contacting customer support during business hours to see if they can help you find the return on your hard drive.

If you used the Desktop program then don't you still have it installed? Yes you need the state program installed to open a .tax2018 file. You can try to download it again, it might let you. You first need to start a fake return to be able to download the state program (go to File-New Tax Return). Then go to FILE -Open and find your return.
You didn't save it as a pdf file? If you only have the .tax2018 file and just need to print it out, you could try the TaxPrinter service to convert a .tax file to pdf at
They might be expensive and it is probably not safe to email tax returns back and forth. They are not related to Turbo Tax.
