If you e-filed your return, you don't need to attach form 1099-R or 1099-SA.
If you file by mail, you must attach a copy of the 1099-R to the tax return if any withholding was taken out.
Thanks for the clear answer! This is my first year e-filing. I had the same question and couldn't get a straight answer from the TurboTax phone support.
This applies federal and state e-filing through TurboTax, correct? We do not need attach the 1099R?

TurboTax creates electronic copies of these forms (not the PDF version) and attaches them as needed to the federal and state returns.
You don't normally have to add any paperwork to an e-filed return unless TurboTax specifically tells you to.
Is this electronic1099-R generated only if I upload data from my pension fund into TurboTax, and not if I type info from my paper 1099-R?
@KinNC If you import your 1099R into your tax software and e-file the return, then it has all been done electronically. If you import the 1099R but choose to file by mail for some reason, then you have to include a printed copy of the 1099R with your Form 1040. Whenever you mail a tax return to the IRS in an envelope you have to include copies of any W-2's or 1099's that show tax withheld.
No, the electronic 1099-R will be generated whether you type the information in or upload it from your pension fund.

Ok ... no matter if you import the info or manually enter it in the program the actual form is NOT part of the efiled return ... only the information on the form is used on the tax return. The IRS doesn't need the 1099 to be sent with the EFILED return since they already get one from the issuer.
Now if you MAIL in the return you must attach all W-2 forms you get plus any other forms that has withholding on them.
xmasbaby0 actually did not answer your question about whether you could type in the 1099-R info if you did not import it. The answer given by xmasbaby0 was referring to a mailed tax return which must include paper copies of 1099-Rs. You can type in the information into a return that is efiled and it works just the same as an imported form. It will be included in the electronic filing.
Edited----okay---you want to know the difference between typing it in your self or importing it. Either way you enter the data, only the data goes to the IRS if you e-file. If you decide to mail the tax return you have to include the paper copy in the envelope.
