Unfortunately, there is no way to retrieve the deleted rental information in TurboTax. If you used TurboTax last year then your asset information will be listed on the Asset Entry Worksheet from last year's return. Please follow the directions in this TurboTax FAQ to get a copy of your 2018 return. When you look at your 2018 return, the total depreciation taken will be listed on the Depreciation report. You can also start a new return and transfer your information over again. You will need to use the clear and start over feature in TurboTax to do so.
I just started a new return for tax year 2019 and imported information from our 2018 return. (Both using TurboTax Premier)
The new return usually knows about the two rentals from the imported info, but it seems to be starting from scratch. So previous depreciation information will be lost. I saw an article talking about percent of ownership, etc. affecting import. None of those situations applied. What do I need to do to get previous rental information imported?
Thanks!
I can't explain why the rental property information would not transfer. You may have to re-enter the asset information. There will be Asset Detail reports as part of the 2018 return. Use the same information that is on those Asset Details and reenter your properties. The program will calculate all prior year (accumulated) depreciation. You might want to consider using the Desktop program, so that you can see and even enter directly on the Asset Details schedules using the Forms mode in TurboTax Desktop. How do I switch from TurboTax Online to the TurboTax software?
Thank you for the answer, David. I am using the desktop version and have used the desktop version for many years. I've never had this problem before. Very disappointing!
If you did not delete the rentals, rather the information did not carry over, I suggest you exit and not save the file then start a new return and again try to transfer last year's return.
If the desktop won't transfer the rental information, you might try saving 2018 as a .tax file and then transferring it.
Below is a link with more information about doing that.
I believe the first time I imported from last year's .PDF file rather than the .TAX file.
Perhaps this shouldn't be allowed, or at least show a warning that all the information from last year won't be imported if you choose the .PDF file.
Basically, you can re-import the data only if you start over from scratch. Since you're using the desktop version, it's easy. Close all programs and delete the .tax2019 file in the documents\turbotax directory. Then open the program and start anew. Make sure you import from the .tax2018 file. If you import from the PDF file you will *NOT* get any information on your rental properties imported from the 2018 tax return.
I did the EXACT same thing and had a mental meltdown. I managed a property in TurboTax for 10 years and sold it last year, without trying to rent it. I told TurboTax that I sold the property earlier, and it very helpfully said "OK We'll be sure to use your depreciation." BUT as soon as I said i didn't try to rent it, it COMPLETELY DELETED all records of the property. Horrible workflow, especially since I told the system I sold the property.
Ultimately, I just wiped out all of my work and started over, and the property info is now back. For those working on TurboTax Online, it's under "Tax Tools -> Clear & Start Over." Hope this helps others.
indeed. this is a terrible and misleading question on the turbo tax walk through and should be fixed immediately.
