@sambb wrote: WHO ARE YOU ?   You haven't checked lately because it actually works.   I asked google AI.. it reports Turbo Tax does not work until sometime after Feb 11. What are you talking about? I have copies of BOTH programs (as well as a few others) and that screenshot was taken earlier TODAY. In fact, TurboTax actually works with respect to rental property depreciation, at least from the test return I set up months ago.    Just a hint: AI is 100% WRONG about quite a few facts and scenarios. I've actually caught Gemini and ChatGPT serving erroneous information in response to several queries. They're nowhere near 100% reliable especially with respect to inquiries that contain ambiguities.
Thank you!  I missed that message, it did show up on my Turbo Tax desktop version too.

You can't enter those room & board expenses yet. This is a known glitch in TurboTax (TT). They are working on it (no announced fix date).   The 2025 education and 529 sections appear totally redesigned, from last year.    The 1099-Q is  only an informational document. The numbers on it are not required to be entered onto your (or your student's) tax return. The interview is complicated and it's easy to make mistakes. Avoid it if you can and you probably can.  You can just not report the 1099-Q, at all, if your student-beneficiary has sufficient educational expenses, including room & board (even if he lives at home) to cover the distribution. When the box 1 amount on form 1099-Q is fully covered by expenses, TurboTax will enter nothing about the 1099-Q on the actual tax forms. But, it will prepare a 1099-Q worksheet for your records (you don’t need it). You would still have to do the math to see if there were enough expenses left over for you to claim the tuition credit. You also cannot count expenses that were paid by tax free scholarships. References: On form 1099-Q, instructions to the recipient reads: "Nontaxable distributions from CESAs and QTPs are not required to be reported on your income tax return. You must determine the taxability of any distribution."  IRS Pub 970 states: “Generally, distributions are tax free if they aren't more than the beneficiary's AQEE for the year. Don't report tax-free distributions (including qualifying rollovers) on your tax return”. "IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education states: If the entire 1099-Q went to qualified expenses, room and board, tuition, etc; then, you do not need to enter the form."

She will need to amend her tax return to change her dependency.   You will have to print and mail your tax return, including her as your dependent.  Your tax return cannot be e-filed since the IRS has already received a tax return with your daughter's Social Security number.  The IRS will pay the tax refund, if any, as shown on your tax return.   See this TurboTax support FAQ for how to print and mail a tax return using the online editions - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/printers-printing/print-mail-return-turbotax-online/L5bwuqXGy_US_en_US   An amended return, Form 1040-X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 20 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return. Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS. If it does reject you can fix it and send it again, that's common.  Happens a lot.     If it Rejects..... Try entering 0 for the AGI. The IRS might have processed your return later so the AGI didn't get entered in time.  Especially if you mailed it.  That works for most people. Entered information and checked F and entered cost and QMID information and total. Still states error. What do I need to do to file my taxes?

Yes, the 2024 AGI on the transcript is the same 2024 AGI that was on your 2024 federal tax return, Form 1040 Line 11

@taxmodern wrote: ....IRC § 262(a) prohibits deducting personal expenses ("no deduction shall be allowed for personal, living, or family expenses").... Thet section of the Code is irrelevant to this scenario because the property was NOT being held for personal use in the tax year the expense was paid and Section 164 provides that real estate taxes are allowed as a deduction for the taxable year within which the taxes are paid or accrued. Clearly, they were paid in the tax year that the property was being held for business use and note that the language contemplates an either/or situation (i.e., it's in the disjunctive).   I believe your contention could be summed up by stating that the deduction (Schedule E) should not be allowed because the tax payment is a personal expense, not a business expense or expense incurred for the production of income. However, the property was NOT being used for personal purposes at the time the taxes were paid. This scenario is not much different than if the owner had bought an appliance in 2024 in anticipation of securing a renter in 2025 AND did not actually pay for the appliance until 2025, which would make the expense deductible in 2025.

If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been filed and accepted by the taxing agency, you should follow these guidelines. Be sure your tax return is accepted and processed.  The 1040-X is scheduled for later this month.  The IRS is not yet ready to accept amendments. The link below will keep you updated on the release date. Check to see if you need to amend your state as well. Do not change your original return until you have reviewed the information so that TurboTax knows the original numbers and the corrected numbers.   You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed. You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return. Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return. The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due Only make changes to the areas of your return that need to be corrected. You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment Amend a tax return for the current tax year Tax Form Availability

Not sure why you were required to download a desktop version of your 2023 TurboTax, but generally, if you filed a prior year return using TurboTax Online, here's how to do an Amendment online:   Log In: Sign in to the same TurboTax account you used to file the original return. Locate Return: On the "Tax Home" screen, scroll down to "Your tax returns & documents" and select the year you want to amend. Select Amend: Click on "Amend (change) return" and choose "Amend using TurboTax Online". Make Changes: The software will guide you through updating your income, deductions, or credits, which will automatically update the necessary Form 1040-X.
