You all have some math work to do. The IRS states in pub 501: Support includes amounts spent to provide: Food, Lodging, Clothing, Education, Medical and dental care, Recreation, Transportation, and Similar necessities. The value of the home and vacations do add to their support along with the food and insurance. Sit down and go through all of this together. The IRS has a quick online quiz to determine who gets to claim you, see Dependent.

Thanks for the response. I am aware of the eligibility requirements/tax rules and have used TurboTax for years and was also an auditor/manager with IRS. In my previous post I explained that I already completed a friends return and there was a question about the source of the distribution which was not on the joint return. AGI for the joint return is below the exclusion threshold. There is no code "M" in box 16. CA is selected for box 15. The program is not computing the tax/exclusion for the joint return. I believe there is a "glitch" in the program. I can do a work around, but should not have to. Intuit/Turbotax needs to fix.

SAVE YOUR TAX RETURNS !
EVERY year before mid-October you should save a copy of your tax return as a pdf and print a copy of it for your records. That way you will not be searching online frantically when you need it for a lender, FAFSA forms, your next tax return, etc.

At the age of 18, she can still be claimed as a qualified child dependent.
Make sure you have entered your child as a dependent in My Info, and that you have entered the child's Social Security number. Careful— do not say that your child’s SSN is not valid for employment. If your child was born in 2025 make sure you said he lived with you the whole year. There is an oddly worded question that asks if the child paid over half their own support. Say NO to that question.
WHO CAN I CLAIM AS A DEPENDENT?
You can claim a child, relative, friend, or fiancé (etc.) as a dependent on your 2025 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:
Qualifying child
They're related to you.
They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

This has appeared several times; the workaround for you is this:
1. Do an HSA Reset (below) to delete all your current HSA data
2. re-enter all your HSA data
3. See if the screen "Let's enter [name]'s HSA contributions" now appears (it has for others).
The second line has the entry for "personal" contributions, i.e., not through the employer.
Make sure that if you are using the desktop software (Windows or Mac) that you update your software before doing the steps above.
HSA RESET
***Reset***
1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies)
2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen)
*** Desktop/Windows***
3. go to View (at the top), choose Forms, and select the desired form (1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)). Note the Delete Form button at the bottom of the screen.
*** Online ***
3. go to Tax Tools (on the left), and navigate to Tools->Delete a form
4. delete form(s) 1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)
5. go back and re-add your W-2(s), preferably adding them manually
6. go back and redo the entire HSA interview....
For step 3 for the Desktop/Mac, I am told that you go to the form and then press the delete key to delete the form. If you find out differently, please let me know.

How do I report the 529 rollover to Roth on the Federal return and the CA return? I meet all the requirements for the rollover to be tax and penalty free on the Federal side. My understanding from reading last year's comments on this forum, is that it doesn't have to be reported on the Federal return and should be left off. But, needs to be reported on the CA return under "adjustments". Is this still the case?
