The illustration is good BUT, I don't believe it's correct. The problem is the "Points". It appears the box of 142 is a default answer. When I enter my beginning date (01/20/1981) and then my points, 3,493 the refund cuts in half. The instructions on the illustration say to enter Start and End date (In BOLD) OR to enter the points. Are you required to enter both the Dates AND Points for just Dates OR points? My ending date is 01/31/2014 and 7,194 points. The refund is higher if i enter just the dates and leave the default points alone.

If your spouse filed a joint return, that return was of both of you and was supposed to have all of your income entered on it too. When you file a joint return it is ONE tax return for both people---not two returns. So---if he already filed a joint return he has to wait for it to be fully processed by the IRS and then it has to be amended to include your income (your W-2's). An amended return cannot be filed until the original return has been fully processed, and you have to use a special form called a 1040X which will not be available until late February. And then....it takes the IRS months to process the amended return.

Turbo Tax is asking me about Non Deductible IRA Contributions, and I'm no sure how to answer it. My wife had a rollover contribution back in Tax Year 2019 of $242,659.28 (Fair market value of $251,854.70) from a work 401K into a regular IRA. We had to end up pulling $40,000 for personal reasons from that IRA in 2025 and had $12,800 Federal Tax Witheld (taxes and early withdrawl penalty) As i'm entering that 1099-R Gross Distribution and Withheld tax, it is asking me about "non deductible IRA contributions"...and I'm not sure how to answer that.

Yes. You can use the sch E to claim that you rented out part of your unit and personally used part. You can then allocate expenses between the rented portion and the personal portion.

My refund was initially rejected because I forgot to include form 1095-A. I corrected the information and attempted to refill (applying for the refund advance), but was stuck in a loop due to the documents that have to be reviewed and accepted. If you’re having this issue, follow these steps: 1.) clear all cache and realtime in safari. 2.) if #1 doesn’t work, delete the TurboTax app and make sure chrome is your browser. Instead of it taking you to the documents where your forced to hit the back button and get stuck starting over, it opens them and downloads them in a separate window, allowing you to proceed to elect the refund option. For anyone who doesn’t see the refund option, make sure you do this: 1.) when it takes you through the steps to finish filing, make sure to choose pay with refund. It’ll take you to a screen that’ll show that you’re ready to file. 2.) Instead, click into the second box that has the checkmark. It’ll list two options for deposit. If you click “back” in the bottom middle, it’ll take you through every option and the refund advance will be the second to last option. 3.) on the next screen, it’ll say “use Credit Karma 5 days early” or “continue with advance”. Click continue with advance. I followed these steps and was able to reapply for the refund advance, even though I corrected my refund to add the 1095-A. Within 5 minutes, my Credit Karma app notified me that I had a $500.00 advance waiting because my return correction was accepted by the IRS. as someone who previously prepared taxes for three years, please let me know if you have any issues, and I’m happy to help how I can.

If your refund is enough to cover your TurboTax fees PLUS the extra “refund processing” fee of $40 ($45 in CA) and your forms are ready then when you are in the FILE section you can choose to have your fees deducted from your federal refund by a third party bank, who will take out your fees and send you the rest of your refund after the IRS issues the refund.
Please make note that if your refund takes too long to arrive (IRS delays, etc.) then you will also be agreeing that the TurboTax fees can be extracted from your bank account even before your refund is issued by the IRS. This comes as an unpleasant shock to many people every year.
If you can possibly pay your fees upfront using a debit or credit card, it will save you that extra fee and even more importantly, the possible aggravation and delays that are often the result of poor handling/poor customer service by that third party bank. We see way too many instances where refunds are delayed for months when users choose refund processing. There have been lots of complaints; there are a number of things that can go wrong when you use refund processing. I suggest avoiding that situation if at all possible.
And....you can never pay state tax due from a federal refund, so do not expect that. The state tax due has to be paid directly to your state.
What is Refund Processing Service?
How can I see my TurboTax fees?

I don't know which situation you are referring to, but the "best" way to address your issue is to delete all your HSA data and start over. This is faster than going through the interview multiple times.
Just remove all HSA data as shown below.
HSA RESET
***Reset***
1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies)
2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen)
*** Desktop***
3. go to View (at the top), choose Forms, and select the desired form (1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)). Note the Delete Form button at the bottom of the screen.
*** Online ***
3. go to Tax Tools (on the left), and navigate to Tools->Delete a form
4. delete form(s) 1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)
5. go back and re-add your W-2(s), preferably adding them manually
6. go back and redo the entire HSA interview....

Yes I will be filling the same when my W-2s come in. My parents aren’t speaking to me since I am not the sexuality they prefer so maybe when they do speak to me I can tell them I’m married but until then I can’t. Also, my husband’s federal taxes were already approved after we amended them. We are just waiting to see if the state approves them.

That they did NOT provided over one-half of their own support (You Did), that you indicated there was no one else in the household providing support to them, and that you did NOT check the box labeled Not valid for employment in the Social Security number section.
