Well a EIN is 9digits.  Your screen shot is 1 digit short.  should be 2 digits then 7 digits.

Same for ssn is 1 digit short.  Should be 4 digits at the end.

Actually I would just enter your total income as Other self employment income or as Cash or General income.  You don't need to get a 1099NEC or 1099Misc or 1099K.  Even if you did you can enter all your income as Cash.  Only the total goes to schedule C.

To enter a 1099-NEC with a TIN follow these steps:

Form 1099-NEC specifically reports Nonemployee Compensation, which you may have gotten in previous years on a 1099-MISC. So, if you worked as a freelancer or contractor last year, you probably got a 1099-NEC reporting how much money you were paid in box 1.

To enter your Form 1099-NEC in TurboTax:

  1. Open or continue your return - be sure you are logged in for link to work:
  2. Navigate to 1099-NEC:
    1. TurboTax Online/Mobile: Go to 1099-NEC.
    2. Select the pencil icon next to the 1099-NEC with the TIN to edit it.
    3. Continue through until you come to the question:
      • "How is your payer's federal ID number formatted?"
Choose the format "xxx-xx-xxxx" (like a Social Security number).
      • This should allow you to enter a TIN.

Thank you for the quick response! Unfortunately, that didn't work. Whichever of the two choices I enter the number in, I get an error message.

I imagine others entering in 1099-NEC info would be having this issue?

Enter the 9 numbers only - do not enter any dashes.   You choose how the number is formatted, either xx-xxxxxxx OR xxx-xx-xxxx, and enter only the 9 numeric digits, no hyphens, dashes, or spaces.    Enter the digits, then scroll down and hit Continue.   If you get an error (you should not), please share a screenshot of the error.

Thank you Dawn for your help! Unfortunately, I still get errors. I am entering the numbers in manually and TT converts to dashes. I get error message either way and cannot continue.Screenshot 2025-03-02 Error 1 TT.pngScreenshot 2025-03-02 Error 2 TT.png

Thank you for noticing the digit disparity! I double-checked against the 1099 and I entered in the numbers correctly. Weird error for sure!

I went ahead and entered in the info as you suggested and that worked, so thank you very much! As well as to the others that helped.

Actually, the problem is it doesn't accept one or the other. If you enter a SSN it still wants an EIN. The frustrating thing is that it did several reviews and said everything was ok. It wasn't until I paid the $203 and put all the info in to file that it found this problem that shouldn't be a problem. This problem is all over the place. There are many threads on this but I guess TT feels it's ok to charge people for a product with a glaring issue. I won't be using this software next year.

If you are receiving an EIN issue, it could be caused by a couple of things. Here are some things to know:

  • An EIN and TIN are the same thing. The number belongs to the issuer of the form.
  • An EIN/ TIN and SSN are the same number of digits
  • Your SSN is there as the recipient.
  • If you have no tax withheld, the box should be blank, not zero.

@KCliff What is your error message? Can you verify the items above are correctly entered?

When I got to the very last step before filing, it said I had an item to review. It said I needed to enter the EIN number, though the form that it showed below had EIN -or- SSN, and the SSN was displayed. It was stuck, I couldn't go anywhere or return to the wages section. All I could do was hit the continue button which just showed the same "error". I tried everything, putting the SSN in the blank, zeros, made up numbers. It wouldn't accept anything. I closed the browser and logged back in, went to the wages page and saw where it said to select EITHER EIN or SSN. I had SSN selected and entered and it still was red in the EIN blank. I ended up deleting the whole thing and entered it as self employed/other income. I got the same numbers within a dollar or 2 so hopefully I won't get audited. $203 for basically nothing. I'm not happy.

If your income is from a Form 1099-NEC, and if you have any related expenses to deduct, it generally works better to enter it on a Schedule C. The form is for self-employed income.

If you had a subcontractor and had to issue them a 1099-NEC, then you should get an EIN. You might consider getting an EIN anyway if you receive 1099-NEC from different payers, so that you don't have to provide your SSN.

It does often resolve issues of being "stuck" on an item if you log out and log back in. This is a good troubleshooting step for many types of computer software issues.
