Your refund has been applied to a past due tax obligation what does this mean I'm not getting my taxes?

I’m confused bc this all happen too me but when I called they said they don’t see any offset and I should get a refund but when I go to the web site it says it’s been applied to past irs tax obligation and they then gave me a number that tells me there is no live service available?

Unfortunately, as the IRS operations are limited due to Covid-19, you may need to wait just a bit longer to contact the IRS for assistance.

Attached is a link with more information as to what departments are available to contact at the moment.

I have attached a link with more answers from the IRS as to why changes are made to your refund.

How do I find out if it went to a student loan or something else?

You'll get an explanatory letter from the Bureau of the Fiscal Service if your refund is offset. The remainder of your refund will be processed as usual. An offset shouldn't delay it, unless your entire refund was applied to your debt.

More info about refund offsets, including contact info and the appeals process, is available in IRS Tax Topic 203

Why does it say my "Your refund has been applied to a past due IRS tax obligation"

I had no debt of any kind as far as I know. I've paid all my loans, and have always received a income tax return.

I called IRS and their operator said I did not have any debt.

What is going on?

I am so sorry you are finding out this way. The IRS can and does withhold tax refunds (a refund offset) if you have certain prior debt obligations such as past-due income tax, child or spousal support, student loans, or state unemployment compensation debts. If this has happened, you should get a letter from the government explaining why you didn't get the entire refund.

If you have not received a letter just yet, you may want to reach out to the IRS directly for assistance. Please see the FAQ link provided below for additional information:

Why is my direct-deposited refund or check lower than the amount in TurboTax?

I just got this message myself🤦🏽‍♀️

Your refund has been applied to a past due tax obligation what does this mean I'm not getting my taxes?

Your refund has been applied to a past due tax obligation what does this mean I'm not getting my taxes?

update: i had to just list the last 7 of the 800 numbers because this forum removes phone numbers.

pathetic.  despite 26 replies to this thread and no responses to several similar threads this forum is zero help as well.

i have been square on all previous tax returns (never been off, late, or audited).

this past year i over-paid on estimated taxes so the irs owed me ~ $2600 but the amount rec'd was ~ $2000 so i called them (8291040) during their office hours and the computer tells me the same BS (past due tax obligation) then says i have to wait until may 1st to call back because i might not have rec'd my return by then (even tho i already rec'd it).

the other irs phone number i found on this forum (3043107) doesn't even give me an option to enter anything then hangs up.

the irs should have to provide a letter in the mail which states the reason that the return was different than it approved and improve their phone's computer.

the 2 things that this past due tax obligation 'could' be for me are

1) estimated taxes (i was 1 day late) but estimated taxes are more than the amount that was withheld and a $600 fee for estimated taxes being 1 day late is un-heard of so this is prob not it or

2) a fee for filing taxes late; however, that is not correct because - while i filed them within ~ 4 days of the cut-off - i filed them on time.

i just checked and i paid all of the estimated taxes on time last year too.

this makes no sense 😠

should i be able to get in touch with someone if i call (8291040) after may 1st?
