When showing expected refund amount on an amended state return, does this account for the fact donations took out from the original state return? Suspect it doesn’t

I added charitable donations to my amended federal tax return and it expectedly showed I was due a refund.  I didn’t expect turbotax to show that an amended state return would also give me an additional refund.  However the refund amount matches exactly the amount I requested to donate from my refund.  Should I file an amended state return or is this an issue with TurboTax (meaning I am not actually owed an additional refund from the state)?

If your state has a subtraction for charitable donations, then TurboTax will probably handle it.

i doubt it is 100% off your tax.

@fanfare I am seeing that there are 2 lines on my amended state tax return form (one for the current overpayment and one for the overpayment calculated in the original tax return).  When doing an amended state tax return, it is putting the current amount of overpayment correctly.  However, when putting the amount of overpayment from my original state return, it is using incorrectly the amount of overpayment minus the voluntary contribution to charity.  Because of this, TurboTax is showing that the difference in tax refund expected from my amended return and original return is the amount I contributed to charity (indicating the state owes me the difference).  However, this is wrong considering I am not changing the amount from my state tax refund that I am donating to charity.  TurboTax should put the amount of overpayment (ignoring what was deducted as a donation) and indicate a 0$ difference owed to me between my original and amended state return (provided nothing of significance changed).

Hopefully that made sense to you.

Hi,

I am having the same issue.  I want to amend my IL state tax return, but TT is ignoring the amount that I donated in the original submittal that was accepted..

Is this a TT issue?

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks!

TurboTax is correct. You do not subtract a voluntary donation to a state program. You chose to give a portion of your refund to the state fund. It’s the same as if you received your refund and gave part of it to a charitable organization like the Red Cross or Salvation Army.

The state gave you a refund. You donated a portion. That does not change the original amount of your refund or count as a subtraction from your refund.

No, TT is wrong.  When I started the amended returned (no corrections yet) it showed tax refund for federal of $0, but an amount (equal to my donation on the State return) of refund owed to me from the state.  Both the federal and the state refund tax should be at $0 since both my submittals were accepted, and I received my refunds.

When I entered my corrections, that same amount (what I had previously donated with my original submittal), showed up as if the state owed my that money that I had donated.  TT has to be wrong.  If you still think you are right, give me more details...
