I haven't received my refund, its been over 10 weeks, I've tried tracking it through the IRS, but it can't give me any information. What do I do now?

According to this IRS update as of April 16th:

The IRS is now opening mail within normal timeframes. The IRS has also made significant progress in processing prior year returns. As of April 9, 2021, we had 1.5 million individual tax returns received prior to 2021 in the processing pipeline. Including current year returns, as of April 9, 2021, we had 16.2 million unprocessed individual returns in the pipeline. Unprocessed returns include those requiring correction to the Recovery Rebate Credit amount or validation of 2019 income used to figure the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Advance Child Tax Credit (ACTC). This work does not require us to correspond with taxpayers but does require special handling by an IRS employee so, in these instances, it is taking the IRS more than 21 days to issue any related refund. If, as a result, a correction is made to any RRC, EITC or ACTC claimed on the return, the IRS will send taxpayers an explanation. Taxpayers are encouraged to continue to check Where’s My Refund? for their personalized refund status and can review Tax Season Refund Frequently Asked Questions.

How long you may have to wait: The IRS understands the importance of timely processing of tax returns and refund issuance. We are processing returns received over the summer and fall in 2020 due to the extended July 15, 2020 tax filing due date. While the majority of 2019 refund returns have been processed, in some cases, we are processing tax returns that were mailed with a payment even though payment associated with these returns have been processed by the IRS. However, we are rerouting tax returns and taxpayer correspondence from locations that are behind to locations where more staff is available, and we are taking other actions to minimize any delays. Tax returns are opened in the order received. As the return is processed, it may be delayed because it has a mistake including errors concerning the Recovery Rebate Credit, is missing information, or there is suspected identity theft or fraud. If we can fix it without contacting you, we will. If we need more information or need you to verify that it was you who sent the tax return, we will write you a letter. The resolution of these issues depends on how quickly and accurately you respond, and the ability of IRS staff trained and working under social distancing requirements to complete the processing of your return.

What you should do: If you filed electronically and received an acknowledgement, you do not need to take any further action other than promptly responding to any requests for information. If you filed on paper, check Where’s my refund? If it tells you we have received your return or are processing or reviewing it, we are processing your return, but it may be under review. We’re working hard to get through the backlog. Please don’t file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.

E-filing your 2020 tax return: To e-file you will need to enter your AGI from your tax year 2019 tax return.  If your 2019 return has not yet been processed, you may enter $ 0 (zero) as your prior year Adjusted Gross Income. If you used the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here tool last year to register for an Economic Impact Payment, enter “$1” as your prior year AGI. See Claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit if you aren’t required to file a tax return.

What was the end result, did you receive your refund, if so how long after filing?

Had to file a paper return (filed 2/23/2021) because IRS rejected my Turbotax filing, even though I obtained a transcript (which took 10 days to receive) and the AGI information provided to Turbotax was correct.  I finally got through to someone at IRS a couple of weeks ago and they said no problem with return,  it is still being processed and I will just have to wait because of the volume they are working on.  I have been waiting for 11 weeks and need the refund very badly since my husband passed away last Oct.  Cannot believe how long it is taking!

Sorry that you are having an issue with the IRS.  TurboTax does not issue refunds or Stimulus checks.  TurboTax is a tax preparation platform.  If you have submitted your return to the IRS, then TurboTax is out of the picture.  IRS is forbidden to discuss your information with TurboTax because of privacy laws.  Things are picking up now that the Stimulus project is well underway.  you should receive your refund soon.

The IRS issues most refunds from e-filed returns in about 21 days, although some returns take more time to review.     @sorahpj   The IRS issues refunds, not TurboTax. This means that we can't say for sure why you haven’t received your refund if it's been longer than 21 days since you e-filed.   We have no access to your tax return once it is accepted - they do not share any processing information with software providers.   That info is only shared with you, the taxpayer.   You'll have to speak directly to IRS to find out more about the delay, unfortunately.

Hey everyone,

This may be helpful. I got access to my transcripts, (everyone can do the same). And the first thing I noticed was the date my return was accepted, I submitted with TT on March 15, and got a notification of acceptance literally the same day, yet on the IRS transcript, the date is APRIL 15, meaning it took them a whole month just to "get it", hence I technically at this point, have not been waiting for two months, but just one. Go figure.

Very helpful! Thank You! The 2 agents I spoke with never mentioned anything like that. The last one I spoke with told me to please wait another 2 weeks.  Like I have a choice?

I filed my taxes through tax slayer on Feb16th well they were accepted on that day.  I'm still waiting on my refund.  When I do the where's my refund tool it continually says it's being processed and I have gotten through several times calling the number that ends in 1040 , it did take me a few hours that includes hold time.  When I was able to make it through the first time the agent advised me that it was still being processed and I should hear something by April 30th either in check form or a letter from them requesting additional information .  At that point that would have been 10 weeks of them " processing" time so the 30th came and went and nothing.  I call and get through again around like the 5th and I get told that I just need to be patient.  they are processing the returns and it's just taking longer than usual.  I didn't get my second stimulus payment which the first rep at the IRS told me they added that to my return.  I also didn't get the 3rd one because it's taking them so long to process my return.  they said that once a refund is issued they will be able to send the stimulus check by that time it's going to be to late and I'll have to wait and request it next year on my taxes which is complete bs if you  ask me.. and the stimulus number is absolutely worthless.  I'm not sure what they are for because when you call them they can't tell you anything.  if you got a payment if you didn't nothing I truly do not know what that number is for because every question I had for them they are not able to answer so I don't know what they do there all day accept tell people they cant answer their questions.   I have contacted that tax advocate people on 4 different occasions and nothing from them.  I'm extremely frustrated and feel honestly like they are doing whatever they want and they can get away with it and no one gives a **bleep**.  WE HAVE DEADLINES TO FILE THEY SHOULD HAVE A DEADLINE TO GET IT DONE.  PERIOD.  the stimulus programs and things of that nature were implemented for people and now the people that need them the most are unable to utilize them do to an oversite basically..

It looks like we're all in the same boat more or less.  I mailed my paper 1040 on March 15, 2021 and they still have no information available via the "check my refund" tool.  I received my State refund (CA) within three weeks.  Since Calif received & processed my paper return, isn't it a safe bet that the IRS did receive my 1040?  I can't get ahold of any live person at the IRS, I've tried every which way.  It sounds like they're very behind.  All the posts are saying people haven't received their refunds - Has anyone received their refund I wonder?

I'm glad this forum is here, at least I know I'm not alone.

@DoinTaxes Mailed returns are taking MUCH longer for the IRS to process so you may be waiting for awhile.

Per the IRS:

COVID-19 Mail Processing Delays

It’s taking us longer to process mailed documents including:

  • Paper tax returns, and
  • All tax return related correspondence.

We are processing all mail in the order we received it.

Do not file a second tax return or call the IRS.

It can take 3-4 weeks  (or longer since the IRS is backlogged) for anything to show up on the IRS site when you mail a tax return.  Expect 6-8 weeks for complete processing of a mailed return.

If  you mail a tax return (or a payment) to the IRS, it is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it like UPS or certified mail so you will know it was received.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.

TurboTax will not know anything about your mailed return, and will continue to show “Ready to Mail” on your account.  TurboTax will not know that you put your tax return in an envelope and took it to a mailbox.  TurboTax does not get updates on mailed  (or e-filed) returns.

When the IRS opens its mail and begins to process mailed returns you can check the status on the IRS site. https://www.irs.gov/refunds

State returns have to be mailed to the state.

Thanks for the info, I just made an account and looked at my transcripts.  Though I mailed my paper return on March 15, 2021, the transcript says it has not been received. Oh darn :(  No doubt it's somewhere in the backlog.  The transcript did show the stimulus payments I received.

I mailed my paper return on Feb. 23.  The "Where's my refund" tool has shown my uncomplicated return is "still being processed" for weeks!  The IRS situation is horrible!
