Amend return to claim Recovery Rebate credit

If you did not receive your first and/or second stimulus payment or if the amount received is not correct, you can claim it on your 2020 tax return as the Recovery Rebate Credit.

You'll need to amend your return to include the Recovery Rebate Credit.

  • To avoid unnecessary delays, do not amend until your original return has been fully processed.

  • You can e-file your 2020 amended federal tax return, but most states require amendments to be printed and filed by mail.

  • Allow 16 weeks for processing.

See this TurboTax FAQ for help with amending.

You can check the status of your amended return here, but allow 3 weeks after filing for it to show up.

In TurboTax Online, to claim the Recovery Rebate credit please do the following:

  1. Sign into your account and continue from where you left off

  2. Click on Federal in the left-hand column, then on Federal Review on the top of the screen

  3. On the next page titled Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount, click on Continue

  4. Follow the interview

  5. TurboTax will determine whether you are entitled to any additional stimulus

  6. Any stimulus amount remaining due to you will show as a credit on line 30 of your form 1040.

If you are unable to amend, please review, Why can't I amend my return?, and sign up for updates.

However, it is important that you confirm if you really need to amend your 2020 tax return first, as there are some situations where the IRS specifically does not want you to do so, such as for Unemployment Income relief, and if you repaid the Advance Premium Tax Credit.

Please review, Do I need to amend? for more information.

I have completed entering my 2020 return but NOWHERE did the form ask me if I received the 1st & 2nd stimulus payment. I cannot see where to address this in any of the forms. I did not receive the 2nd stimulus payment for my two children. I've read you need to look in the Federal Review section and the question should be asked there, but it wasn't. My husband and I do not qualify for stimulus due to income but our children still do and we didn't get anything. How/where do I correct this before I file? I hope someone can guide me quickly as everything is done. (I have till June 17th to file). Thanks!

Follow these steps to enter the stimulus payments received or missed so that TurboTax will calculate your Recovery Rebate Credit:

  1. Go to the search box and enter stimulus. Click the Jump to link.
  2. Answer Yes.
  3. At the next screen, Let's double-check the amount you received, answer No to edit the first-round and second-round amounts.
  4. If no stimulus amount was received, enter 0. An amount must be entered in each box. When finished, click Continue.

Dependent children under 17 years old will be classified by their parents' income, also.

Only if the children are not claimed on your return and provided more than 50% of their own support would they be eligible for stimulus payments based on their own earnings.

You mention June 17 to file. You must have a disaster-related extension from recent winter storms in Texas, Oklahoma or Louisiana. This deadline is June 15, 2021. The IRS extends to the next business day when the 15th falls on a weekend or holiday.

To check eligibility, please see:

The first stimulus payment was for up to $1,200 each.

The second stimulus payment was for up to $600 each.

The third stimulus payment was for up to $1,400 each. Any missing amounts will be reported on the 2021 tax return that will be filed in the spring of 2022.

We file jointly and did not receive our 2nd stimulus check, we have received the first stimulus check, but not the second. Where do we amend our return to claim the credit for not receiving the second check?

Will we be notified by Turbo Tax once the changes have been made?

Have you already completed and filed the 2020 tax return?

Did you not go through the Federal Review section of the program where you were specifically asked about stimulus payments, assuming you were eligible based on the 2020 tax return information?

Well I got my first one and my second one on my income tax and it was right I got my third one when I approved the third one I got on my debit card but but the other ones are coming out with fix come out with do I need to do anything or do I just wait and see if it goes on my card

@Floydbry There is no fourth stimulus check.   It would take another act of Congress for a 4th stimulus check, so there is nothing for you to do for that.

If you used the recovery rebate credit to get the 1st and/or 2nd EIP payments then wait for your income tax refund----they will be a part of your tax refund and will go to whatever card or account you chose to receive your tax refund on.
