As you walk through the questions, your refund numbers will change. The full Child Tax Credit is added to your refund number after you enter your children and a little more information. When you enter the amount you already received, it is deducted from the full amount that is already part of the refund amount showing.
You can see your Child Tax Care Credit amount on line 28 of form 1040.
If you are using TurboTax online by clicking the following:
So in my case I could see the other half of the payment shown as part of the refund amount then after inputting what I received for the advance child tax credit (half of the full amount in monthly increments) the refund amount dropped by the amount already paid. Why is this? I didn't receive any overpayment.
Before you entered the amount of your advance child tax credit, your refund included the full child tax credit. And it is normal that it is reduced by the amount of advances you received when you enter that advance amount.
Before I entered the advanced credit amount the refund only appeared the show the other half of the child tax credit (the portion I should be getting with my refund). It did not include the entire amount (advance child tax credit plus the other half that should be received as a tax refund) I apologize if I'm explaining myself poorly.
Please check your form 1040. The balance of your child tax credit (after deduction of the advance child tax credit) is shown on line of your form 1040 Preview your 1040 and check if this amount on line 28 is correct. And the amount on line 28 is already included in your refund.
You can preview your form 1040 by following these steps:
I agree with @jeremy.v.henson line 28 on the 1040 form is only showing half of the tax credit, so when I input the amount we received in 2021 it removes the amount we should receive in 2022.
@mylesallen02 No----you are misinterpreting what the the software does. And it is admittedly confusing to people. To boil it all the way down for you-----look at line 28. That IS the other half that you get now.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.
What confuses folks the most is you expect to get ALL of the other 1/2 of the credit IN the refund posted at the top of the page ... however the credit must first pay off or down your tax bill before it becomes refundable.
Review the actual form 1040 lines 24 - 34 to see how the credit is being used up.
Hey @Critter-3 I see what you are saying, but if i remove the payments I received in 2021 the 2022 payments show up in my refund. If I keep everything the same and add my 2021 payments to the tax form, the 2022 payments are removed completely. I’ll try with a different tax program and see if i get the same results.
Your refund changed because you are:
In the software , TurboTax computes that you qualify for the Child Tax Credit and gives you immediate credit for the total amount of the Child Tax Credit.
You are able to view the Child Tax Credit on line 28 of the Federal 1040 under Tax Tools / Tools / View Tax Summary / Preview my 1040.
Report the Advance Child Tax Credit payments received under Federal / Deductions & Credits / Your tax breaks / Advance payments, Child and Other Dependent Tax Credits at the screen Tell us about any Advance Child Tax Credit payments.
TurboTax then reduces the Child Tax Credit by the amount of the advance payments and posts the final amount again on line 28 of the Federal 1040.
You may again view this under Tax Tools / Tools / View Tax Summary / Preview my 1040.
That is not correct in my case. Initially it is only crediting for half of the total amount. So say I received a total advance payment of $2000 which is essentially half of the total amount eligible for, so total amount being $4000.
Based off of what you are saying then, when I first start the tax process it should show the full $4000 as a refund and when I get to the point where I enter how much I received as advance then that refund amount should reduce to $2000. That is not what is happening. When first starting the process it initially only shows half, so $2000, then when entering the advance payment received that $2000 is removed.
OK ... let's stop discussing the Refund-O-Meter which is confusing and misleading. Please review the actual form 1040 ... the rest of the CTC you are eligible for is on line 28. And after your taxes are paid the refund is on line 34. Please review lines 24 thru 34 to see how the refund is calculated.
