That's great to hear and yes, that is the way my situation should work out. I will pay a small amount to the IRS now, around $100, and receive a little over $3,000 from the state. Then when I file the amended return, I should receive the $500 Credit for Other Dependents from the IRS and finally about $45 from the state, if I file an amended return with them after the amended federal return is completely processed. I could get used to this: refund after refund after refund 🤣
So I am in the same situation where my daughter forgot to say that I would be claiming her. She already has received her refund. At this point im confused on what I should do first. I know my daughter has to file to amend but do I wait to file until hers is amended? Or do I file now and not place her as a dependent so that I am not late. Then after her amendment is fixed, go back and amend mines and claim her as a dependent?
Unfortunately you will need to file a paper return because there is no way to get around the e-file system once your dependent has already filed and claimed themselves. Paper file with your dependent included on your return.
This article will give instruction on how to print and mail your return.
Your dependent will need to amend their return to indicate someone else is claiming them.
See this TurboTax FAQ for help with amending.
My child also did this so we just sent in her amended taxes and my return on the same day my questions is how long will it take to get my refund direct deposits now and will it also slow down my stimulus check
Amended returns can take 8-12 weeks to process. It could be longer now with everything going on. I would suspect the IRS will use your 2018 return information for the stimulus.
No, I did not say that. I cannot be claimed as someone elses dependent and I accidently checked that box on my 2019 return. HOWEVER, my parents cannot claim me either, and are not going to claim me on their taxes. They have not even filed their 2018 or 2019 taxes. I make too much money anyway for them to claim me. My 2019 has been fully processed and I was not eligible for a refund. I did send in a 1040x and changed the way I answered the question and also attached a note to explain. Do you think I will receive the stimulus?
Since you didn't receive a refund, they probably don't have your banking information to make a direct deposit. I would go to the IRS website and use the "Get My Payment" app to see if you are eligible for the stimulus payment and to give them your direct deposit information.
I put my banking information on my 2019 return. I had a small refund coming but they used to apply to previous IRS debt.
OK, should I fill out the Non-Filer portal, or file 2018 taxes as normal with a 1040?
I would definitely check on the status of your stimulus payment at the IRS website using "Get My Payment"
I owed them a small amount and since I paid from my bank account, I figured they would use my bank account information from my 2019 return to deposit my stimulus payment, but when it didn't show up last week, I went to the "Get My Payment" app and it showed they were planning to mail mine. I entered my bank info and now they say they will do a direct deposit.
Where did you put your bank info?
This is the message I am getting
We are unable to provide you with the status of your payment or perform the action requested because:

LOL, I saw that message too... Turns out I made a mistake when I entered my tax return info, so I had to go back and double check, but once I was in, they asked if I wanted direct deposit and then it asked for bank account information.
Same here. The only difference is on my 2018 return I checked the box I can be claimed as a dependent. I was never claimed. On my 2019 return I didn’t check the option. Will I still need to file an amendment for my 2018 returns even though it was corrected on my 2019 return
On my 2018 returns I accidentally had the box checked that states I could be carried as a dependent. I wasn’t carried. When I file my 2019 taxes I corrected the error. It wasn’t checked on my 2019 taxes. Will I still need to file an amendment for my2018 return to qualify for the stimulus payment.
No, they say they will only look back at 2018 if you did not already file 2019.
