Will they still go by my 2019 return if I just recently filed it. It’s just showing it’s been processed ?
If you just recently e-filed and they haven't issued your stimulus payment, I think they will go by the 2019 taxes. Might be a good idea to check on the IRS website using their "Get My Payment" app. (I think it will ask for some specific numbers from your 2018 or 2019 taxes to verify your identity.)
Lines 24-30 says to leave blank 24,28,29 for amended 2018 or later and I do not see a place to correct that I can be claimed as a dependent by someone else.
@ddeluga The place to correct whether you can be claimed as someone else's dependent is in My Info. Click edit by your name and go through the screens to answer the question about whether you can be claimed as someone else's dependent. It will not change the "lines" on your Form 1040. It will change whether the "dependent" box is checked up near the top of the Form 1040.
My step son accidentally checked the box stating nobody’s else can claim him as a dependent how will that effect my refund versus his

Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.
See this TurboTax support FAQ on amending a tax return originally completed and filed using the 2020 TurboTax online editions - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/amending/help/how-do-i-amend-my-turbotax-online-return/01/27577
The IRS Form 1040-X for amending a 2020 tax return is scheduled to be available on 03/25/2021 (subject to change)
the first question is he your dependent or not. he's your qualifying child or qualifying relative - ie your dependent, if he's your dependent he must so indicate on his return regardless of whether you claim him or not. if he's your dependent you'll not be able to e-file and claim him. you may be able to e-file after his amended return is fully processed. the bad news is that the 1040-x for amended returns won't be available until about 3/25/21. then it could take the IRS 4-6 weeks to process it. this is the first year the IRS is allowing non-professional taxpayers to e-file amended returns so timings are up in the air. If you are entitled to claim him but don't you may lose out on significant credits and it may affect your filing status costing you even more in taxes. it is unknown if you will be able to e-file even after his return is amended. I, therefore, recommend that you mail in your return claiming him. what will likely happen is that your refund will take longer but you should get it based on your return as filed. At some point, if your stepson doesn't submit an amended return, the IRS will send each of you a request to amend your respective returns.
you can claim him/her as a qualifying child if all these tests are met
• he/she had the same principal abode as you for more than ½ the tax year. Temporary absences like for school are ignored
• if he/she is not a full-time student, he's/she’s under 19 at the end of the tax year. If a full-time student, he's/she’s under 24 at the end of the tax year.
• he/she hasn't provided over ½ his/her own support
• he/she didn't file a joint return unless there was no tax liability but merely filing jointly to facilitate refund of taxes withheld or estimates paid
or you can claim him/her as a qualifying relative if all these tests are met
• his/her gross income for 2020 was less than $4,300
• you provided over ½ his/her support
• he/she isn't a qualifying child of another taxpayer
If we choose not to claim our daughter and not amend her return after she didn't check the dependent box, will she get into tax trouble because she really does fall under the dependent guidelines.
@VaCubFan We can't answer that question, because it is up to the IRS to enforce tax law. Our job is to advise what tax law allows and doesn't allow. If your daughter claimed as an independent, and as a result received Recovery Rebate Credit, (or other credits that dependents may not claim), this would be something that she should correct, even though that means paying back money. If you and she decide not to correct it, that is not something we can enforce. But the IRS can audit, make corrections, as well as assess penalties and interest for what amounts to false tax claims.
I made the same mistake. I checked that no one can claim me as a dependent and now my mom's return is being rejected by Turbotax. I just mailed my amend 1040 X and file Extension Form 4868 for my mom because I know it will take up to 16 weeks for 1040 X to process and my mom will definitely miss the deadline (May 17). Does it work? Or should I mail my mom's return instead of filing the extension form 4868 for her?
It is fine to file an extension for her, but she may still not be able to e-file even after the amended return has been processed. She will have to paper file for 2020.
For more information, see: How do I switch from "E-File" to "File by Mail" in TurboTax Online?
i accidentally checked the box no one can claim me but my parent claimed me how do i correct my return
You need to edit your Personal Information in TurboTax and you will come to a screen that says Do Any of These Apply to (taxpayer's name?) One of the options will be Someone else can claim (name) on their tax return. You need to check that box.
Hello,
Thank you for the information. However, when I pull up the 1040x I do not see where I select "someone else can claim me". Only choices are "Single, MFJ, MFS, HOH, QW" OR "If you checked the MFS box, enter the name of your spouse. If you checked the HOH or QW box, enter the child’s name if the qualifying person is a child but not your dependent."
With a blank to fill in.
There is a box to fill in on page 2: "Explanation of Changes". Is this where I would type in that "my parent can claim me"?
Thanks again!
