IRS is way behind on all tax returns, that includes Form 1040 and Form 1040-X.
It is always recommended to wait for your original return to be processed before you amend.
Then you will know exactly what IRS did.
If you are very familiar with Form 1040-X, use your own judgement on whether to wait or not.
expect to wait 16 weeks for an amendment to go through even in normal times.
Using TT 2019 to amend my 2019 return. I got to the "E-filing is Closed for the Season" screen, clicked "continue", and got to the "E-file Your Federal Return for FREE" screen with "E-file" option recommended. Clicking that option, I got the "Here is the return you're amending" screen with an "E-file my federal amended return now" option. (It notes that my fed and state returns have been transmitted, which is fine since that's what I did last year.) I click continue and go through several screens, e.g. sign, review, etc., until it get to "Transmit Your Returns" screen, "just one click away" from filing. TT wants me to correct "today's date" to be 01/01/2020 through 12/31/2020 and won't let me go on until I do. I change it to 12/31/2020, figuring if there's a question, I'll point them to this. I click the "Transmit Your Returns" button, it gives me a green check for "Reviewing" and "Preparing". "Validating" and "Transmitting" are supposed to happen next, but instead of another green check, it sends me to a "Your transmission Didn't Go Through" screen that says TT was unable to send my return to the Intuit Electronic Filing Center because "Validation failed: The IRS and state agencies are not currently accepting amended tax returns via e-file. E-file will be available again in late January or early February for state amended returns." For federal, it says go back to print and mail.
However, this Intuit link "Updated for Tax Year 2020" still says I can e-file "but only for tax years beginning with 2019".

So why can't I E-file a 2019 1040-X?
TT did not choose to support efiling of the 2019 amended returns. Your only options is to either mail in the return or pay a professional preparer who is/can offer that option.
I must be on candid camera. Yes, we know TT is choosing not to support efiling. You're the umpteenth person to point that out. The question is WHY?????
Not just why they aren’t. It’s why the inconsistency. The linked Intuit article I included says TT 2019 can efile an amended 2019 return if you follow the instructions. If you follow the contradictory instructions, you get to an efile transmit button that starts, but then stops, and indicates e filing will start again in Feb or Mar, but of course it’s May and it still doesn’t work. So is it a bug they haven’t been able to fix and are still working on it, in which case I’d wait for them, or is Intuit just not doing it, in which case I should start looking at a different tax program.
you do know that the IRS does not allow the window to open until the end of March its has nothing to do with Turbo Tax
you do know its not Turbo Tax who controls the efiling... ITs the IRS
The IRS is allowing efiling of 2019 1040x's...TT is not participating. Check your facts before chiming in.
“... end of March.”
It’s now May.
And now it's end of September 2021. Is this still the case?
@kentarourata This thread has had multiple posts from a lot of users. We do not know what you are trying to ask. If you are asking if you can e-file a 2019 tax return, original or amended, you cannot. It has to be printed, signed in ink and mailed.

A 2019 federal amended tax return, Form 1040X, cannot be e-filed using the 2019 personal editions of TurboTax. E-filing of the 2019 amended return using the personal editions of TurboTax closed after October 2020.
A 2020 federal amended tax return can be e-filed using the 2020 personal editions of TurboTax at any time on or before the end of October 2021.
You cannot efile an 2019 amended return thru turbotax in 2020. I filed a 2019 amended tax return in April 2020 on paper because turbotax wouldnt allow it electronically. I filed an extension for 2020 to wait until the 2019 amendment was processed. It took until Aug for the IRS to process the 2019 amended return. I then filed my 2020 tax return so that when my 2020 tax return was processed, the amended 2019 tax return was in the system and there would be no inconsistencies.
Thank you for such a quick response!
Yes, I'm trying to file 1040x for 2019 tax. Now I understand I won't be able to e-file. I'm using turbo tax on web, can it be used to print out the form i could sign and mail?
Thanks!
No. Online is only for 2020 returns. How did you file the original 2019 return? If you used Turbo Tax online you need to amend using the Desktop program installed on a full Windows or Mac computer.
