I guess, maybe, Intuit just sucks. Perhaps, the firm calculates the costs and benefits, concluding that enabling the function would hurt their profits. Anyhow, I might be too lazy to file my 2019 1040x simply because I prefer the efiling option, which should have been available according to IRS's announcement. In other words, I am giving up my $$ for this company's inferior service and I am no longer a loyal customer of TurboTax. In fact, I am going to persuade all my relatives and friends to switch from it.
I also have been using TT for years because I am lazy. But I think it's time to move on. I was forced to file my 2019 1040X via mail and now it has been stuck in submission processing hell for over a year.
I am at the point of signing my 2019 amended return and the signature date must be dated in 2020. I just spoke with a customer service representative and they read from company literature that we are not able to e-file an amended return now and must print and mail.
This is beyond ridiculous that in today's technological world TurboTax does not support what the IRS allows.
It is indeed ridiculous but no point in wasting more time on it. Looks like printing and filing is the only option now. One thing I'm wondering... I'm getting ready to eFile my 2020 taxes but will be mailing the 2019 amended return. The 2020 return will certainly hit IRS's systems faster than the mailed version. I still need to make sure my 2020 return includes the updated/amended 2019 figure (despite them not having hit the IRS systems yet). Sure hope it doesn't trigger a silly audit.
Thanks TurboTax for causing all this unnecessary headache and confusion!!!!
Could you file for an extension for the 2020 return and hope that the IRS processes the paper 1040X before the 2020 1040 is due? That’s at least what I did, because of the same concerns.
That is an option to file the extension to wait for the amended return to process is allowed but in most cases is totally unnecessary.
Really??? You think I don't have to wait for the Amended return to get processed before submitting my 2020 return? Does IRS just reconcile it in their back end? I'm thinking the timing difference is just a matter of a few weeks.
Really ... you don't have to wait to efile the 2020 return.
But they say, amended returns get 3-16 weeks to be processed. When my 2020 hits their system the carryover data won't match what they have from 2019. I would've thought for sure that would be an issue and trigger an audit. Doesn't that make sense?
What carry over data ?
Thanks for the quick reply. Only changed figures are AGI, refund (as the result of an added K-1 form) that's about it.
> When my 2020 hits their system the carryover data won't match what they have from 2019.
that’s exactly my concern. I have an incorrect excessive HSA contribution on my 2019 return that I need to remove via 1040X. That (incorrect) value would carry over to the 2020 return. I removed it there, so now the 2020 return is correct but inconsistent with the 2019 return until the 1040X has been processed.
It would seem to be an easy consistency check for the IRS computers to carry out. Not sure that it would immediately trigger an full audit or perhaps just an inquiry, but I definitely would like to be in a position where I can tell the IRS that I already (x weeks ago) submitted the 1040X for 2019 to fix the value. Hence my extension for the 2020 return even though I have it ready to go now.
Here's another irritation (and suggestion) - you cannot file an extension electronically using turbotax. But if you use the free online link thru the IRS, it takes you to a turbotax web site where you can file an extension electronically! Turbotax is increasingly appearing to me to be run by people who just want to maximize their short term profits and not support their long time users.
Are you sure about that? Isn't that only for TurboTax online customers? I bought the Desktop version.
If TT's. Tier 3 says you can't e-file an 1040X for 2019, show them this Intuit Turbot Tax Tips article, updated for TY2020, which says you can. There's also links to downloads of Windows CD version, but I use Mac so haven't tried.
