I e-filed both Fed and Calif returns about a month ago with turbotax premier desktop; they were quickly accepted. I had an aha moment a week after, and I realized I made a mistake on my 8606. I owed Fed and Calif about $2k total additional.
I e-filed amended returns for both earlier today, and the Federal was rejected due to lack of an IP PIN. I went to my turbotax program and entered the IP PIN that I obtained. However, I don't see a way to "re-e-file." I didn't see the "Fix my return" prompt in turbotax, so I went to "Federal > Other Tax Situations > Identity protection PIN" and entered my PIN. But I am unable to actually e-file again. When I click the "check e-file status," all I get is the status that the return was rejected. My Calif amended return is still pending.
Please help! I'd rather not have to mail an amended return. (I even clicked the mail return button, and turbotax wouldn't allow it since I had already e-filed the amended return...

Are you by chance on a MAC?
This workaround unblocks and resets the efile status for the tax return which could be achieved.
You need to change the SSN to dummy SSN (like all zeros in ssn) and perform check efile status, then re-enter your real SSN afterward. The steps are listed below.
Steps:
Thank you! I am indeed on a Mac, system up to date.
I am in the middle of more important things than taxes right now. I will do the things you recommend later and then check back here.
Hmm, it sort of worked. I am unable to get to the initial screen where there is a link to "amend return," but now it thinks I never filed the original 1040.
And when I click on "file a return," it says,
"Unable to e-file
It looks like you've prepared a federal amended return form 1040X.
It also looks like you haven't e-filed the 1040 through TurboTax.
To e-file the 1040X through TurboTax, you must have e-filed the 1040 through TurboTax."
Maybe, I am unable to e-file? My Calif amended return is still pending at this time too, but TurboTax is unable to give me status updates because it thinks I didn't e-file... I will wait for my email confirmation for California...
I do have MacOS "time machine" backups of prior versions of my return, if reversion to a prior version would help?
If you are using TurboTax Desktop, you will need to correct your return and/or update your program by following the onscreen instructions.
If you continue having issues, you can check some of our common solutions. If your tax return can't be e-filed for some reason, TurboTax will let you know.
If your issue continues, contact us again and give us more details.
The reason TurboTax tells me I can't e-file my 1040-X is that it thinks I didn't file a 1040. Which is false. I filed both Federal and California returns about a month ago. This is the error I am trying to work around. Thank you.
When you followed these steps, did you perform the check efile status before re-entering the real SSN?
You need to change the SSN to dummy SSN (like all zeros in ssn) and perform check efile status, then re-enter your real SSN afterward. The steps are listed below.

Yes, I performed all those five steps, in the exact order listed. Thanks for trying to help.
You will just have to mail your amendment.
I was assuming that after these attempts... At least my California was accepted early this morning.
Thank you.
