Why is turbo tax calculating my total income to be more than what has been entered?

So, if I add up all of my income from each category (wages, dividends, cap gains, K-1, etc.) it’s a lower number than the income turbo tax shows in the review section.  I have searched and searched for how this can be possible but I can’t find how the system is arriving at a higher number than what has been entered.  So, as a result, it seems my income is being overstated, causing a higher tax liability.  Please tell me if you have any idea what’s going, because it’s driving me crazy.  Thanks!

You need to look at each on the 1040 tax return.  Which lines are too much?  Like Line 1 for wages.  Check each W2.  I would delete the W2s and enter them again Manually.  That usually fixes things.  If you imported any 1099 forms check them close.  They can import wrong.

I entered everything manually.  What I’m saying is that I can look at what I’ve entered, and I can add all of the income categories, and the total is less than the total the software is displaying when I get to the end to review it all.  I’ve been using turbo tax for years and never seen this.  At this point I’m about to get a different software

If you are looking at a summary screen or review screen those show the full amount as income and lump a lot of stuff together. You need to check the actual 1040 form.

Before filing,  You can preview the 1040 or print the whole return

Yes I know. This is why it’s so frustrating to not be able to talk to someone.  I’m telling you there is a problem.  I know how to do math.  Geez

Why is turbo tax calculating my total income to be more than what has been entered?

You can't narrow it down to which kind of income is too much?

Why is turbo tax calculating my total income to be more than what has been entered?

Here is what I see:  when I go to the ‘federal taxes’ tab and look at the ‘wages & income’ section, I have entries for wages and salaries, interest on 1099-int, dividends on 1099-div, stocks, ira, 401k, pension plan withdrawal (1099-r)., schedule k-1., and hsa.

Ok, so the problem I am seeing is that when I add all of those up, the number is less than what turbo tax shows when I go to the ‘federal review’ tab.  In the ‘federal review’ tab there is a summary of income, deductions, taxable income, and credits.  There is a link that say ‘detailed tax breakdown’.  When I click that link it beaks out income in 3 categories: wages, interest and dividends, and other.  The wages and interest and dividends numbers are correct.  The “other” total is higher than what is on the wages and income tab.  There is no way to break down the “other” section. So, I don’t know why it is calculating something higher than what has been entered.

I'm not sure what is going on, but I do have a way to help.

You can share your return with a specialist.

The return will be "sanitized", meaning all names, social security numbers and personal references are removed.

We will then be able to determine the source of the issue.

If you agree, please follow these steps:

  1. Log into your TurboTax account
  2. Go to Tax Tools
  3. Then select Tools
  4. On the pop-up screen select Share my file with an agent
  5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
  6. Please provide the Token number in a reply to this post.
  7. Include @JohnB5677 in your reply so that I get a notification.

Why is turbo tax calculating my total income to be more than what has been entered?

@JohnB5677

Hello, I'm having the same issue. my breakdown is that when i total all income I've entered into turbo tax I get $65,267. Which is correct for what I've earned. However at the federal review stage there's a breakdown of income, Wages, $39,812 - Taxable interest income, $98 - Self-employment income, $14,047 - Unemployment income, $11,310 - Other income, $11,310.

All is correct and matches what I've entered except for the "other income" category. It seems to just be duplicating the unemployment income but i can find where its getting that number from. So in the breakdown its showing that my taxable income is $11,310 more than it should be.

I know this is an old post but i followed the steps to send a copy in. my token number is 1266233

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for sending your token. I took a look at your return, and‌ your income from your 1099-G is being included twice.

You've entered the same amount in boxes 1 and 5 of the 1099-G within TurboTax. Box 1 is for unemployment compensation and box 2 is for RTAA payments. These are both taxable and are reported on different lines of the tax return.

Please review your actual 1099-G and confirm that it matches what you have in TurboTax. If not, update your form in TurboTax.

Why is turbo tax calculating my total income to be more than what has been entered?

I have the same problem, my total wages entered even says $44,825.95, but on the Here's your picture of Your 2024 Income it says $120,490.  Something is definitely wrong with the program.  I have checked it numerous times.  I have never had this problem before and I have used Turbo Tax for over 30 years.  Now what ??????

Why is turbo tax calculating my total income to be more than what has been entered?

@DWW1954 Go back to all the sections you entered income.  There is probably a misplaced decimal point or a comma entered as a decimal point.  Edit as necessary.

If you cannot correct this issue, then delete the forms/income entered and re-enter manually.
