Why did turbo tax charge me 80$ to do my taxes

If you see a charge for $40, you paid for a state return, the Pay With Your Refund option, or TurboTax Deluxe.

Follow these steps to review your fees in TurboTax. After signing in to (continuing) your online return, select the blue/green Take Me To My Return button on the main screen.

  1. Select Tax Tools on the left side of the screen and then Tools.

  2. A Tools Center box will pop up on your screen with four blue boxes.

  3. Select the My Fees box on the right.

Tip: If these instructions don't work (for example, on your mobile device) open the File section and then proceed to the Review Your Order screen. This also shows the breakdown of your charges.

You either started with or upgraded to the Deluxe online edition from the Free online edition for a federal tax return - $40

State tax return when using the Deluxe edition or higher - $40

Option to pay the TurboTax account fees with the federal tax refund - service charge $40

See this TurboTax support FAQ for checking your fees - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/charges-and-fees/help/how-do-i-review-my-fees-in-turbotax-online/0...

See this TurboTax support FAQ for removing fees - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/charges-and-fees/help/what-can-i-do-to-reduce-my-fees/01/26051

The TurboTax Free online edition is for very simple tax returns that do not require any other form or schedule other than the Form 1040.  If your tax data requires entry on any other form or schedule then you must upgrade to the Deluxe edition or higher.

If you have not paid for the online edition you are using, have not filed your tax return or registered the Free edition, then you can clear your return and start over with a lower priced edition. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the program screen while working on the 2020 online tax return. Click on Clear & Start Over.

OR -

You can use the TurboTax Free File Program - https://freefile.intuit.com/

IRS Free File Program - https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/
If you are eligible you can use the IRS Free File Program delivered by TurboTax which is free to file both a federal and state tax return. The IRS Free File Program delivered by TurboTax edition is a full featured personal tax program and on a separate website from the TurboTax online editions.

To qualify for free 2020 federal and state tax returns with the IRS Free File Program delivered by TurboTax, you'll need to meet at least one of these requirements:

  • A maximum 2020 adjusted gross income (AGI) of $39,000; or
  • You qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC); or
  • You served as active duty military (including Reservists and National Guard) with a maximum 2020 AGI of $72,000 (you'll also need a military-issued W-2).

Why did turbo tax charge me 80$ to do my taxes

Why was I charged when you said it's free

Why did turbo tax charge me 80$ to do my taxes

@Datariwa

WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY?  I WANT THE FREE EDITION

The information that you can enter in Free Edition is pretty limited now.  Thanks to the new tax laws that began for 2018 returns, there are no more simple Form 1040EZ or 1040A's.  Everything goes on a Form 1040 that has three extra "schedules" with it, and if you need any of those schedules, you are not able to use the Free Edition.  Using the standard deduction instead of itemizing does NOT mean you will not need any of those schedules.https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/4511011-what-happened-to-the-1040a-and-1040ez   If you started in the Free Edition and entered any data that required any of those three schedules, you have to upgrade to a paid version and if you are watching the screens carefully you are alerted to the upgrade.

When you chose to “start”  in the Free Edition —

Directly below the words “Free Edition” there is a blue link that says “For simple tax returns only”   If you click that link it brings up this information:

You can file with TurboTax Free Edition if you have a simple tax return.*

*A simple tax return is Form 1040 only.

Situations covered in TurboTax Free Edition include:

  • W-2 income
  • Limited interest and dividend income reported on a 1099-INT or 1099-DIV
  • Claiming the standard deduction
  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EIC)
  • Child tax credits
  • Student Loan Interest deduction

Situations not covered in TurboTax Free Edition include:

  • Itemized deductions
  • Unemployment income reported on a 1099-G
  • Business or 1099-NEC income
  • Stock sales
  • Rental property income
  • Credits, deductions and income reported on schedules 1-3

How does TurboTax make any money?

Customers with more complex tax situations will file with our paid TurboTax products that provide all the additional forms and guidance they need. We also offer additional benefits that go beyond filing your taxes, but they are optional and are not required to file simple taxes for free. We hope that, over time, as our customers with simple returns need more capabilities as their financial situations change (for example owning a home, having a child, managing investments), they have loved our products and services so much that they will choose our paid TurboTax offerings to prepare and file their returns.

Or—-Use this IRS site for other ways to file for free.  There are 8  free software versions available from the IRS Free File site

https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/

If your TurboTax fees are higher than expected, you can reduce them by removing add-ons:

Why did turbo tax charge me 80$ to do my taxes

It honestly feels like this entire marketing scheme of TurboTax regarding free taxes is a massive scam. It’s advertised as free for simple tax returns, then you get to the end of filing and the option for “simple” is much different than how people generally refer to a simple low income return, THEN YOU ARE FORCED TO PAY FOR THE DELUXE WHICH IS $40 FOR NO REASON, THEN STATE!!! This is a load of crap, and I’m going to be contacting support in order to get my money back for the Deluxe purchase that I was forced to make. There is no free option like this post advertises. This is virtually a marketing scam.

Edit: Intuit was sued recently due to their **bleep** marketing. NEVER USE TURBOTAX. THEY WILL STEAL YOUR MONEY FOR NO REASON. THEY’LL STEAL ANOTHER $40 IF YOU ELECT TO PAY OUT OF YOUR RETURN WHEN FILING. NEVER USE TURBOTAX. THEY ARE SHADY, DIFFICULT, AND EVIL. USE HR BLOCK OR IRS FREE FILE. THEY ACTIVELY CAMPAIGN TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE NEVER AWARE THAT IRS FREE FILE IS AVAILABLE!!!  I HATE INTUIT TURBOTAX!!!
