You guys are unbelievable. I've been using turbotax for years and have never had a problem... until now. This is the first year I've had a 401k retirement plan. Since I've contributed to it, I'm eligible for a credit. However, Turbotax free edition doesn't cover Schedule 3 nonrefundable credits, so I was forced into upgrading to the Deluxe Edition. I wax fine with it at first. I would be paying $40 to getting a $55 credit from my retirement contributions. $15 profit right? WRONG! For some god forsaken reason, with the Deluxe Edition, you have to pay to file your federal and state returns! So now I'm paying $120, all over a measly $55 credit. WHY AM I PAYING FOR SERVICES THAT ARE FREE WITH THE FREE EDITION.
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
The Free edition does not support the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit so you would have to upgrade to the Deluxe edition at $40. The state programs are an additional charge of $40 when using the Deluxe edition or higher.
If your charges are $120, then you selected the option to pay the TurboTax account fees with your federal tax refund. The service charge for this option is $39.99. You can remove the pay with refund fee and pay the TurboTax account fees with a credit/debit card, see this TurboTax support FAQ - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/downgrading/help/how-do-i-remove-pay-with-my-refund-fees-in-turbot...
IRS Free File Program - https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/
If you are eligible you can use the TurboTax Free File Program which is free to file both a federal and state tax return. The Free File Program edition is a full featured personal tax program and on a separate website from the TurboTax online editions.
To qualify for free 2019 federal and state tax returns with the Free File Program, you'll need to meet at least one of these requirements:

Maybe you should let people know this info BEFORE you tack on all of your exorbitant fees at the end - after people have taken the time to enter all of their financial info and after you have allowed them to see what their refund COULD BE...
Or would telling people what your product costs upfront be too radical?
I was also charged $80 on 5/1/20 for a 1040 that was SUPPOSED to be free?? Never again will I use this method. So many hidden charges...UNBELIEVABLE!!! And when you call the number listed on my bank account, it's only a recording. It doesn't give you an option to speak to someone. TERRIBLE
Attempted to file Federal & State taxes on April 18th. Submissions rejected by both Feds and State. Reason given was that my 2021 AGI did not match even though TurboTax imported this number from last years 1040.
Taxes printed and paperwork submitted via USPS. Was charged $25 for the efile service even though it did not work.
How do I obtain a credit/refund for this service?

You will need to contact TurboTax support to get the e-file charge removed from your account. Use the key words Billing Issue
See this TurboTax support FAQ for contacting support - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/using-turbotax/help/what-is-the-turbotax-phone-number/00/25632

If it was rejected for AGI—-be aware that many 2020 returns took so long for the IRS to process that your 2020 AGI might not be in the IRS system. Try using zero instead.
If filing with zero is rejected then file again but select the option that you did not file last year. The IRS does not see that question and it will allow you to e-file with no AGI question.

If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.
No one in the user forum can resolve a billing issue. If you have a question about your TurboTax fees or billing, make sure you use the word “billing” in your request for help. Do not use the word “refund.”

I did not have a refund but had to pay $20 for State filing and have TurboTax Premier. Beware!! This needs to be identified up front when starting a return. Biggest disappointment I've had since using this tax software since at least 2003.
E-filing fee in desktop software
Did you purchase desktop software with state software included? They sell Deluxe both with and without state software--so you have to be careful which one you choose. And even if it does have the state software download included, that is for preparing the state. There is an extra fee to e-file the state. Before March 1 that fee is $20; after March 1 it increases to $25. You can avoid the state e-file fee if you print and mail the state instead of e-filing it.
