Turbotax on PC, 2022 on Chromebook

For the past several years I used/downloaded Turbotax to my laptop running Windows.  That device has died and I replaced with a Chromebook.  I see that I can use the Turbotax Online version, but Turbotax does not work on a Chromebook with the downloaded version.  If I used the online version, I am guessing my history from the prior year can't be used and it will be as if I am starting fresh with my 2022 tax filing-is this correct?
Thank you!

No.  You can transfer from the Desktop program to the Online version.  But you need to have the tax data file ending in .tax2021 from the computer to transfer.  Did you make any backups before it died?

Here is more info on the Online version.

The Online web version is different than the Desktop CD/Download program you install.  The pricing structure is totally different.  You pay to prepare the return whether you efile or print and mail.  Efiling is free and included in all versions.  And state is a separate additional charge in Deluxe and above.   Oh and Online is only good for 1 Account and 1 return.

In the Online versions you have to use a higher versions to enter certain types of income like investments and self employment.  Online you can’t see the actual forms like the Desktop program until you pay.

You can access an online return from any computer and device.  Your return is stored at Turbo Tax.  So be sure to download the pdf and .tax files to your computer when you are done or you may not be able to access it when you need a copy.  Or if you ever need to amend.

If you use the online version for your 2022 tax return, you "CAN" import prior year tax data from the .tax2021 file on your computer. So you would need to copy the .tax2021 file from the windows computer if you can, to somewhere on the new computer (if possible with a chromebook) so that you can access it and import from it using the online 2022 tax program.

Thanks for the great information.  I do have a file called TAX2021 file but think it is a Windows version so it says 'this file type is not supported' on my Chromebook, but this file can be 'read' using the web browser?

Yes.  You should be able to transfer it into the online version.  Here’s How to transfer into the Online version, expand the blue link if you used the CD/download last year........(just replace .tax2020 with 2021 etc.)

If you used the Desktop program before you may not like the online version.  It has less features and no Forms Mode.  You can only do 1 return.  Your return is only saved online so be sure to save both the .tax2022 data file and the pdf file to your computer when you are done.  In case you need to amend in the future or if you need a copy to get a loan or something.  You might not be able to access your online return when you need a copy.
