Turbotax Deluxe 2021 for Mac crashed. It won't restart. I loaded a fresh version of the software. That won't run either. It checks for updates then crashes.

BrianM, you are very welcome! Sorry—you’re right, I see now it’s a directory. So glad it worked. It’s inconceivable to me that TT support doesn’t know this simple simple fix.  I wasted HOURS with them. This particular fix was mentioned earlier, either here or on Apple community. But I didn’t understand it until someone spelled it out really clearly. Also I’m paranoid about screwing something up in those hidden library files.

So totally agree!!  It is beyond belief that their support folks are not escalating this to the programming team and getting this fixed.

Thanks again!!

I tried this one and it worked...for a short while, then crashed and won't reboot. My issue is I have filed Federal but not State. MUST do it this way in NJ if you are in a civil union, so I did. Now I can't get the info back in order to have the exact info to file with the state. 8 hours and counting with tech support, none of whom have any clue. Sorry, but if they can't play nicely with Apple, they shouldn't be selling a Mac version.

UPDATE: After trying every tip I could find online a million ways and a million times for two days now, what finally worked was filing my federal return only. Went right through! So I went back and filed my state return only. More success! Finally, I went back to file my local city return-- crash. Somehow, the local tax return was the problem(?). At this point I'm just going to print and mail that one in.

I have now officially tried every single suggestion in this thread, repeatedly. None of them work. I have spent hours and hours on this, deleting every last possibly-related file, creating new admin accounts and installing there, ALL OF IT. I just need to submit my taxes! I'm literally on the very last step, but can't submit my return.

Turbotax Deluxe 2021 for Mac crashed. It won't restart. I loaded a fresh version of the software. That won't run either. It checks for updates then crashes.

I am having the same issue repeatedly.  Using TurboTax Home and Business 2021 for Mac desktop.   I am using a MacBook Pro running Big Sur.  Was able to install, run all updates and import data from last year and work on it for roughly one week.  A few days ago when filling in a field on a 1099 A and/or 1099 C (under Miscellaneous income) section an ‘O Dear TurboTax has crashed…’ message occurred.  This locks the programs up and am unable to continue.   I have followed the various instructions for completely uninstalling TurboTax, all the associated library files, etc, emptied trash.  The same result numerous times.  Have completely un-installed and removed all associated files, caches, etc 4 or 5 times.   Also called TurboTax tech support and spoke to 2 different support people.  One support person walked me through the uninstall and reinstall process (as I had done before) with the same exact result (same error).  Is there any other suggestion on how to fix this issue?  Thank you!

Did you follow this procedure?

And be sure that the ~Library/Caches/KSCrash/TurboTax was deleted if present.

Hi, yes, that is the procedure I followed a few times (did complete un-install, empty trash and reinstall).
I contacted TurboTax tech support on the phone after I could not get past the error.  They had me follow the same procedure again as I shared my desktop Turbotax screen.   (I also tried previously deleting and trashing the Cache as a few users suggested.  Unfortunately, the exact same error message).

After a fresh re-install the message 'Oh dear.  TurboTax ran into a problem and has to shut down. " continues to appear.  Any other ideas?  Thanks! 🙂

The only other idea is there might be something else in your user account that is corrupted.

The only what I know to test for that is to switch to another administrator user account (or create a new one using "System Preferences, Users & Groups" to create one) and install Turbotax in that account.  If it does not crash then there must be a problem in the first account that probably needs Apple support to find.

I'm running into the same issue. Very frustrating.

How do I find files in the library and/or on my computer that are related to turbotax 2021 so that I can delete them? a search didn't find any such files. I deleted the app, restarted the computer, downloaded the app again  and it crashes each and every time before it even gets to a meaningful screen, while searching for updates.

Tax date is around the corner...

Further info:

- In my case I was actually able to work with the app successfully, and then all of a sudden when I tried to open the app to continue working on a return it crashed, and keeps crashing, so I can't finish the return)

- My mac OS is 11.6 (Big Sur)

Deleting only the app does not good at all.

Fabulous! Thank you so much, that did it. I was able to reinstall after deleting the files and can continue working on the return. Bless your heart!

Turbotax Deluxe 2021 for Mac crashed. It won't restart. I loaded a fresh version of the software. That won't run either. It checks for updates then crashes.

Update of Crash:  (Short, Yes, it still crashes under new Mac admin account with a fresh re-install)

More Detail:

I did create a new account on my MacBook Pro  (Intel version running Big Sur) with admin privileges re-installed TurboTax for Home & Business 2021, imported last years tax data (the Turbotax 2021 saved file was not able to be imported).  Restarted my taxes from importing 2020 (last years TurboTax data) and able to work on the file for a full day.   Saved the file and closed TurboTax.

Today TurboTax crashed again with the same exact error message.

What was specifically very notable was that it crashed in almost the same exact location of where my original crash occurred.  That location is when working under Personal > Personal Income > Miscellaneous Income (1099C or 1099A).   I was typing in a field about 5 or 6 entries down when the error message come up.

Any advice what to do at this point?   I really believe there may be TurboTax software coding error in the 1099 Miscellaneous section for the Mac that is causing the program to crash repeatedly.  I never previously ever used these fields in previous years so for it to crash repeatedly on almost the exact same area on a new import and after fresh install leads me to believe it has nothing to do with my data).

I really need to get my taxes done - any other suggestions are greatly appreciated!  Thanks.

What was the error message?

On the Misc Income screen which category did you chose to enter information?  Or did you choose "Visit All"?

Is there a crash report in Applications -> Console -> Crash Reports -> TurboTax?   If so what is the "Exception Type".

And if now there is a new ~Library/Caches/KSCrash/ in the Users Library then deleat it before restarting TurboTax.
