Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them.

Hello, I am thinking I might have two login accounts. I am unable to find my 2016 tax return.

This request just asked for me to change my password and brought me back to the original login that does not have my completed 2016 return. Any other suggestions?

I'll tell you another way below to run the tool.  You may be in a loop.
I'll also tell you a way to use an alternate method by SSN.

Hello, I am thinking I might have two login accounts. I am unable to find my 2016 tax return.

Hello,

The previous solution did not work.  However I have been told that TurboTax has files hidden or unreadable if they are transferred onto a jump drive like I have done. I am unable to access them on my new laptop via jumpdrive. I filed my 2016 return using a CD on a different computer since my new one does not have a CD Rom. Long story short the computer I filed on was damaged and discarded due to a water/sink accident along with the CD in the drive. How can I access my 2016 return?  Can you help?

Well, this is a surprise, since your question seemed to ask about online accounts.  Now it's something entirely different.  The answer was strictly for people using online TurboTax, so obviously it won't work in your case.

If you prepared your return locally on a computer using a CD, then it has nothing to do with online accounts.  Not sure where you got info about "hidden files or unreadable" when transferred to a jump drive.  Never heard of such; people transfer tax data files between computers all the time.  Or did you try to copy an entire installation from one computer to another?  If so, then that doesn't work.

Did you install the 2016 software on the new computer?   If you don't have a CD-ROM drive, and need the program installation file, TurboTax Support can furnish you a download so you can install the program.

What exactly did you copy to a jump drive?   Did you try to copy the installed folders and files from one computer to another?  That won't work.

The only file you need from the old computer is the *.tax2016 data file, and then you can open it in the 2016 software.   So do you have the *.tax2016 data file?   Did you copy that or salvage the data file from the damaged computer onto a jump drive?

Or did you happen to save any PDFs from the old computer?   Do you have a PDF of your return on the jump drive?

Hello,

Sorry for the confusion.  I was initially under the impression is that maybe I had two different logins and that is why I could not find it and in an earlier conversation with your support team under ticket# ######, it was the only conclusion that she could come up with.

To answer your question, I no longer have the old computer.  I did transfer the 2016 files to a jump drive from my old computer and they show up in an unviewable format.

I do not have the *.tax2016 data file.

I do not have the 2016 software on my computer

All of the files I have saved were initially as a PDF and when transferred to my new computer they are unreadable.

This is mainly a user community forum, not TurboTax Support, so we can't see your Support Ticket.

I have no idea why a Support agent mentioned an online account when you had the desktop CD product.   A desktop return does not use an online account, and a copy of a desktop return is not stored in an online account.  All the tax files are stored locally on the computer.

A PDF file created by TurboTax should be readable on any computer that has a PDF viewer such as Adobe Reader or similar, and can be transferred by jump drive normally without a problem, unless the file is somehow corrupted.  What happens when you try to view the PDF?    Perhaps that can be fixed.

Otherwise, all of your tax return info is stored in the *.tax2016 data file.  If you had that, it can normally be easily moved from computer to computer to open in the 2016 desktop software.   But unfortunately, you said you don't have that file.

I don't know how long it's been since you filed.  Your 2016 tax return transcript may or may not be ready yet.  But you can download a free tax return transcript at this IRS website.  Or can order one there to come by mail in 5-10 calendar days.

A full copy of the actual return from the IRS costs $50 and takes several weeks.

To get a list of your User IDs and recover account access, you can use the tool at the link below.  Try using your phone number first.

NOTE: Before running the account recovery tool below, log out of all Intuit accounts including this user forum, or you might end up in a loop.  Then clear your browser Internet cache, close your browser, then reopen it, and go to the link below.  You may wish to copy this link so you can paste it into the new browser session.

If still no luck after running that on your phone number, User ID, or email address, then run the tool yet again, but this time leave the data field blank, and choose the small blue link that says "Try something else", and it will look you up by SSN and other parameters.
