Tax Year Prior to 2020: I want to talk to a HUMAN

You can print and mail state for fee or in the Desktop program it is $25 to efile a state return ($20 before March 1).  In the Desktop program you get one free state PROGRAM download to prepare unlimited state returns.

Why do I have to pay to do my state tax, I bought TurboTax Deluxe at Costco?

Using the TurboTax desktop CD/Download editions there is a $25 e-file fee for a state tax return.  You can avoid this charge by printing and mailing your state tax return.

The bank routing and account number you entered will be on the Filing Instructions page for your tax return.  They will also be on the Federal Information Worksheet for a federal tax refund in Part V of the worksheet.

To access your current or prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

When you sign onto your online account and land on the Tax Home web page, scroll down and click on Add a state.

This will take you back to the 2022 online tax return.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen.  Then click on Print Center.  Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return.  Choose the option Include government and TurboTax worksheets

Tax Year Prior to 2020: I want to talk to a HUMAN

I took my 1st RMD distribution in November 2022 which was ~$28,400. I had 12% tax taken out of the distribution or approximately $3,400 for taxes. Where was that posted? I couldn't find it, nor could I find a place I could put it into my tax return. Perhaps I am missing something? Please advise - or call my direct phone number at: [phone number removed]

Thanks, Gerry Paradine

@Gerryp50 When you enter the Form 1099-R and there are taxes withheld, those taxes are entered by the TurboTax program as a tax payment on your tax return automatically.  For federal taxes withheld those are posted on Form 1040 Line 25b.

To enter, edit or delete a form 1099-R -

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
On IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R), click the start or update button

Or enter 1099-r in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to 1099-R

This is the worst human experience ever.  As a Lead Product Manager for a fortune 34, this is unacceptable.   I have a receipt for paying for state and federal and apparently my federal never got filed and I cant even get a real human to talk to.  Beware do not use this service.

Same here!!!!   I have receipt for payment for services a copy of the prepared return and it was never filed and I got the transmit button.

Tax Year Prior to 2020: I want to talk to a HUMAN

@H60Hadgi Paying the TurboTax account fees does not file your tax return.

Did you e-file your tax return and was it accepted?
Only the IRS and your State control when and if a Federal or State tax refund is Approved and Issued.

You complete your tax return by finishing all 3 Steps in the File section. In Step 3, to e-file your tax return, you must click on the large button labeled "Transmit my returns now".

After completing the File section and e-filing your tax return you will receive two emails from TurboTax. The first email when your tax return was transmitted and the second email when the tax return has either been accepted or rejected.

Note - Once a tax return has been Accepted by the IRS or a State, TurboTax receives no further information concerning the tax return or the status of any tax refund.  Only the taxpayer listed on the tax return can obtain the status of a tax refund or a tax return.

To check the status of an e-filed return, open up your desktop product or log into your TurboTax Online Account. You can find your status within the TurboTax product.
If accepted by the IRS use the federal tax refund website to check the refund status - https://www.irs.gov/refunds

If accepted by the state use this TurboTax support FAQ to check the state tax refund status - https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899433-how-do-i-track-my-state-refund

After the tax return has been Accepted by the IRS (meaning only that they received the return) it will be in the Processing mode until the tax refund has been Approved and then an Issue Date will be available on the IRS website.
See this IRS website for federal tax refund FAQ's - https://www.irs.gov/refunds/tax-season-refund-frequently-asked-questions

Tax Year Prior to 2020: I want to talk to a HUMAN

If I already payed for my 2018 taxes with you can I cancel .and use it for my 2019taxes I fell like I'm getting burn.not knowing how much I'm getting before I pay again for nothing

Tax Year Prior to 2020: I want to talk to a HUMAN

@nicolasgomez70

You must use the 2018 program to complete the 2018 return and only a 2018 return.

If you also need to file a 2019 return then you must either purchase the 2019 program  OR  get the forms/instructions from the fed/state websites for free.

Tax Year Prior to 2020: I want to talk to a HUMAN

@nicolasgomez70 You are too late to get a refund for a 2018 return.  Even if you prepare a 2018 return that shows a refund, you have forfeited that refund.  If you owe tax to the IRS, you still have to pay.

Each tax year has its own software that is written to comply with the tax laws in effect for that tax year, and which has the forms for that tax year.  You are not "getting burned" by having to use the correct software.   Perhaps waiting so long to prepare the tax return is what will cause you a problem, though, since if you owe, you will owe interest and penalties.

Tax Year Prior to 2020: I want to talk to a HUMAN

@nicolasgomez70

And....if 2019 does not get filed by April 18, 2023, you will forfeit the 2019 refund.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2019 and 2020 and 2021 is permanently closed.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2019, 2020 or 2021 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/state-taxes/help/how-do-i-contact-my-state-department-of-revenue/0...

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline.  If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.
