It appears you are using Turbo Tax Deluxe, which has a fee for your Federal plus a separate fee for your State.
Also if you opted to have your fees deducted from your refund, there is also a fee for this.

You can review the fees associated with your refund by following the instructions below:

  1. After signing in to TurboTax, open or continue your return.
  2. Select Tax Tools on the left side of the screen and then Tools.
  3. Tools Center box will pop up on your screen.
  4. Select the My Fees box on the right.

Tip: If these instructions don't work (for example, on your mobile device) open the File section and then proceed to the Review Your Order screen. This also shows the breakdown of your charges.

The software didn't give a choice to choose free filing, automatic prompt for the deluxe which stated only $40. for federal but I see a total of $120 deducted from my tax return.  My annual income was not over $34000 so I wasn't I able to choose the free filing option to start with doing my tax returns

Deluxe online edition - $40

State tax return when using the Deluxe edition or higher - $40

Option to pay the TurboTax account fees with the federal tax refund - service charge $40

Thus - $120

  • A maximum 2020 adjusted gross income (AGI) of $39,000; or

I don't know how to add comments on here but seriously I was supposed to get a "free" tax return then because I have itemized deductions oh we can't move forward unless you upgrade for $60 then I'm almost done and somewhere another $40 is tacked on. So I paid $100 for my free return... next year I'm doing my own and mailing it in H & R block isn't much better

I too was charged $120 to file, last year it was only $40 to file because I work for Twitch. Soon as I got a royalty job, it appears Turbo Tax is no longer free for some odd reason.

I will not be filing with TurboTax in 2022 due to being unknowingly upgraded to Deluxe without permission. I don't seem to be the only one being mislead by advertised prices/ charged extra when it comes time to pay for services. Each year I am having to pay TT more and more; I might as well give my earned money to an actual CPA.

Did you start out in Free Edition, which is only for very simple returns and had to upgrade to Deluxe?

Certain forms are not available in Free Edition and require an upgrade to Deluxe or higher, such as one of Schedules 1-3, itemized deductions, education credits, student loan interest, retirement savers credit, Child and Dependent Care credit, HSA, etc.

If so, you might be able to switch to the other free product--TurboTax IRS Free File Program--that we can tell you about.  It's fully-featured, prepares all the usual forms and schedules, and is free for both Federal and state returns--if you meet one of the qualifications to use it.  We can tell you more if you haven't already paid.

@Jrock198042   Are you using Deluxe?  Deluxe is currently $39 for federal.  State is a separate $39.   And if you want to have the fees deducted from a federal refund there is a Extra $40 Refund Processing Service charge (45 in California).  So try to pay with a credit card to avoid the extra charge.
