When I had gotten help filing my taxes last year. Because of a mistake I'm now having trouble filing taxes for now

I was filing for the two stimulus checks I had not received. I was told to just file for one of them to see if it went through and then go back and file for the other one. I got one back and tried to go and get the other one and then was told I could not e-file it. And now I'm finding out that the one that I did not send it out for was the one for the year I got my taxes done. So now that your has to be amended for me to get my other stimulus check

The first stimulus checks were issued in 2020; the first one was for $1200 for adults and $500 for qualified children dependents under the age of 17.   The IRS was in a hurry to send out those checks so they sometimes used information from your 2019 return to send out the check.  Or sometimes they sent it after you filed your 2020 return.

The second stimulus was sent in late 2020 or early 2021; that one was $600 per adult and $600 for qualified children dependents under the age of 17.

The 3rd stimulus check was $1400 for adults and $1400 for any dependent you claimed, and was sent out in 2021.

If you did not receive the first or second stimulus check, you can get it by filing a 2020 return and use the recovery rebate credit in Federal Review.   The stimulus amount will show up on line 30 of the Form 1040.

If you did not receive the 3rd stimulus check, you can get it by filing a 2021 tax return and use the recovery rebate credit in Federal Review.    The stimulus amount will show up on line 30 of the Form 1040.

Check your own bank account for deposits of the stimulus checks, and check your online account with the IRS to see what the IRS shows they sent to you.

Try checking your online account with the IRS (and if you filed a joint return—check for BOTH of you)

If you need to file a 2020 or 2021 return ---- they can only be filed by mail.  E-filing is closed for those tax years.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2019 and 2020 and 2021 is permanently closed.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2019, 2020 or 2021 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline.  If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.

If you need to amend 2020 or 2021:

See this TurboTax support FAQ for amending a tax return - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-return/amend-change-correct-return-a...

And....those amended returns cannot be e-filed.  They must be filed by mail and will take at least six months to be processed.

The current tax year being filed is 2022.  There are no stimulus payments for tax year 2022.

Which stimulus check did you not receive?

For tax year 2020 there were two stimulus payments -

EIP1 is for $1,200, plus $500 per qualifying child. EIP2 is for $600, plus $600 per qualifying child

For tax year 2021 there was one stimulus payment -

EIP3 is for $1,400 for each eligible adult and each qualifying dependent in a household.

If you filed a 2020 and a 2021 tax return and did not receive a stimulus payment for one of those tax years, you will have to amend the return and complete the Recovery Rebate Credit section for the payment.

A 2020 and/or 2021 tax return or amended return can only be printed and mailed, they cannot be e-filed using TurboTax.

If you did not file a 2020 and/or 2021 tax return -

To complete and file a 2020 and/or 2021 tax return using TurboTax you would need to purchase, download and install on a personal computer one of the desktop editions for the tax year required from this website - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

Not sure why you think the stimulus has anything to do with filing your 2022 return if that is what you are now trying to file.  There is no place on a 2022 return to enter anything about stimulus checks.

What happens when you try to prepare/file your 2022 return?   Is it being rejected when you e-file?  That has nothing to do with stimulus checks.   Did you enter the wrong AGI, or did it take a long time for you to file last year?  The IRS might not have your 2021 AGI in the system.

You received an email that we cannot see that tells you why your tax return was rejected.

Some rejected returns can be fixed and re-filed.  Some have “un-fixable” reasons for the rejection and have to be mailed instead. What is the rejection code or rejection message?

If it was rejected for AGI—-be aware that many 2021 returns took so long for the IRS to process that your 2021 AGI might not be in the IRS system.   Try using zero instead.

If filing with zero is rejected then file again but select the option that you did not file last year.  The IRS does not see that question and it will allow you to e-file with no AGI question.

If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.
