TurboTax error 70001 is a  connectivity issue that usually resolves itself.  If the issue doesn't resolve on its own, close TurboTax, restart your computer, and reopen TurboTax.

If that doesn't solve your issue:

  1. Make sure you aren't on a work computer. (Most work computers have a strong security firewall that can blocking TurboTax from accessing the Internet.)
  2. Check your firewall (like Windows Defender, Bitdefender, or AVG). Make sure it's not blocking TurboTax from accessing the internet.
  3. Run TurboTax as the administrator.
  4. Ensure TurboTax is up-to-date

To reset your Internet connection:

  1. Turn off your computer, your router, and your cable modem, in that order.
  2. Wait a minute, then turn your modem back on.
  3. Wait another minute, then turn your router back on.
  4. Once your router is back up, turn your computer back on and try logging in again.  Ref: TurboTax

I've just spent four hours trying to resolve this issue.  It was impossible to talk to a human customer service rep.  I was caught three times in an infinite loop of useless assistance on the phone--only to be hung up on the same number of times.  I am almost finished with my 2019 taxes and find that I am going to have to  buy a second download from TurboTax to finish our taxes.  Glad I could help your corporate bottom line.  NOT.  I am furious, frustrated, and disappointed for I have been a long time user of this product.  If you get the error 70001 don't bother trying to fix it.

I too tried all the suggestions - check router, restart, re-install. Spent two hours on the phone with support to no avail. Today took one of his suggestions:  I created another Account on my Windows machine. Logged into that account and successfully opened Turbotax with no Error. Closed it and went back to my main account and voila TurboTax opened without issue and I am continuing to use it. This is a software bug that Intuit needs to find and fix. I've never had this issue with previous versions of Turbotax or any other windows app.

I am a product support specialist with Turbo Tax and had the opportunity to work with a customer today and found a solution to the Error 70001.

Start up your device in Safe Mode.  Use the link below for instructions.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/installing/help/start-windows-in-selective-startup-mode/00/26089

Once you open Turbo Tax Desktop in Safe Mode successfully, follow the steps to exit Safe Mode and Start up in Normal Start-Up. The software should launch as expected.

I hope this resolves the issue for all whose day was interrupted by it.

THANKS!!!!   THANKS!!!!

I went into safe mode as described and opened Turbotax.  Without an internet connection I didn't get far but Turbo Tax did open without an error.   When I exited "Safe Mode" and opened Turbotax - Error 70001 was gone!   Thanks again for your help/suggestion.

I have had the same problem. After trying all but uninstalling/reinstalling to no avail. I cleared all Windows Temp Files, Chrome and Edge cookies and history, and still got Error 70001. In Win10 Task Manager, TurboTax.exe wasn't shown in the Processes list. Under the Details tab, it showed as Suspended with UAC virtualization Disabled, running under the desktop user account in which I was logged in. Couldn't stop the program from there: "Access denied" (even for the Local Administrator).

 What finally worked was this:

1. Log in with a Win 10 Local Administrator account.

2. Rename "C:\Program Files (x86)\TurboTax\Individual 2021\32bit\TurboTax.exe" to "C:\Program Files (x86)\TurboTax\Individual 2021\32bit\TurboTax-yymmdd.exe", where "yymmdd" is the current date (so you'll know when this was done).

3. Shut down and re-boot your computer. On startup Win10 can't launch TurboTax.exe (it's not in the Win10 Startup apps list but it launched anyway when the program file was named TurboTax.exe).

4. Rename "C:\Program Files (x86)\TurboTax\Individual 2021\32bit\TurboTax-yymmdd.exe" to "C:\Program Files (x86)\TurboTax\Individual 2021\32bit\TurboTax.exe".

Then I could open an run Turbo Tax.

Some thoughts.

I had this problem after leaving TurboTax via File-Save-Exit to have dinner. Win10 went into sleep mode while I did that. Got Error 70001 when I tried to open it to finish after waking up Win10. That time, shut down and reboot fixed that.  I finished entering and checking my return at 2:00am.  I used File-Save-Exit to close TurboTax and I put Win10 into sleep mode. Next morning after shaking Win10 awake, Error 70001 persisted even after power off on computer, router, cable modem. After calling Support and having a productive conversation, I tried the file-rename-reboot-rename trick and it worked. It's quicker than uninstall, reinstall, re-update and it seems to work. You might have to do this every time your computer sleeps? I didn't try a shutdown/restart instead of a sleep/wakeup cycle so that's an unexplored possible  workaround.

Intuit really should investigate this issue more thoroughly and pinpoint and fix the code that causes this aggravation. As it is, a late-to-prepare taxpayer could miss the filing deadline.
