TT 2022 Home and Business will not import previous year's return

This year 2022 filing, I had the exact same issue. However, I attribute this to the fact that I didn't save last years return in the correct format to enable TT to access the file. My bad. could it be you had a similar issue? or if you used a new computor and maybe the file didn't exist on the hard drive?

The PDF is not the best way to try to import and transfer your last years  files.  you need to save the files in the turbo tax format. They are in a folder called turbo Tax find this folder in your documents and open and see if your saved files are there. If they are you can choose  browse or start a new file in TT  and it should lead you to that folder. turbo tax auto saves so you should have some files in there from last year. I only save the pdf file for a quick reference it is not a working file and wont transfer over

Pdf file will not work for transferring information into TurboTax.  The original poster was either mistaken or had some strange configuration on their computer that displayed their taxfile as a pdf file.

I'm having the same problem - I went back to 2021 and tried to save the .tax..  on my computer and could not.  The software froze over and over again.  : (

Have same issue, unable to import .tax2021 file to TT2022.

TT2022 doesn't recognize .tax2021 as import file.  Doesn't find when starting new return, can browse to folder and TT2022 doesn't display any of .tax2021 files. If force it to select a .tax2021 file it displays "We do not support import of this file format, please us PDF file".

How can I get it to import .tax2021 file?

Sounding more and more like a glitch in the TT 2022 software!

You need to be sure Adobe Acrobat is installed and up to date.  Then the file will save properly.

Not adobe PDF issue, PDF will import but looking to get full import from .tax2021 file.  TT2022 doesn't recognize .tax2021 as a valid file/extension.  The .tax2021 file i'm attempting to import is file saved from TT2021.

@myegor   How are you trying to import it?  You start a new 2022 return, go up to File-New.  Then it should look for any 2021 files or you can browse to where it is.  If it says invalid file type that  sounds like you are trying to open it, not transfer it.

Or try this.  Do you still have 2021 installed?  Try opening 2021 program and see if you can get your 2021 return to show up in it.  Go to FILE - OPEN.   Then save it again with a name and place you can find.  Go to File - Save As.  Then start a new 2022 return and transfer from the 2021 file.

@VolvoGirl    Start with File/ New Tax Return...TT2022 searches drive and doesn't find any .tax2021 files. Option to Browse available, select Browse, go to directory with .tax2021 files.  Files do not show in browse window in directory, change file type to all files (*.*) all files show, select .tax2021 file and receive below messageTT2022Fail.png

Glad you got it.  Haven't seen that error message before.

TT 2022 Home and Business will not import previous year's return

same problem here. last year I used TT21 home and business on line. This year I bought the CD home and business, this years CD does not find last year's .tax2021 file- treats me as if I never filed with TT before. I can find several .tax files in it in my TT file under Documents, but the TT CD program cannot.

I can however, start a new on-line return and TT2022 finds the .tax2021 file. I file a 1040 SR ( well TT selects that for me and that is how the 2021 taxes were filed)

So I cant use the CD I bought, I guess? If that is true, perhaps TT could warn people once they start on line they cannot switch to CD?

Did you download the tax data from your 2021 online tax return?  If so, when you start a new tax return using the TurboTax 2022 desktop CD/Download editions, use the Browse link to find the 2021 tax data file, .tax2021, to where you downloaded the file.

If you used the online version last year and need to transfer your info to this year's Desktop version there are 2 ways depending on what you have.

1.  If you saved the actual .tax2021 file (not just the pdf file) to your computer before online was shut down in Oct. then start a new return  and the very first thing you do is Transfer from .tax file.  You can only transfer at the very beginning.  You should be able to download the .tax2021 file from Online.  See this to download the .tax data file, the second section on how to get the data file from the prior year.

2.  If you didn't save the .tax  file to your computer or lost it,  there is a way to do it by starting a 2022 return in the Online version, transfer to that and then continue in the desktop version.  You won't have to pay for Online.

First transfer into the Online version

Then to switch to the Desktop program
