Solution - IRS IP PIN Versus Turbo Tax PIN Turbo Tax 2024

Our 2024 tax was just accepted using only one IRS IP PIN I just got following your instructions. We didn't receive any letter. This is what has happened.

IND-517-02 - 'DependentSSN' in the return must not be the same as Primary or Spouse SSN on another return where Primary or Spouse have not indicated that they could be claimed as a dependent on someone else's return. Visit www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/identity-theft-dependents  for additional information. To electronically file with this duplicate condition, an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) will be required. If you wish to get an IP PIN and you don't already have an account on IRS.gov, then you must register to validate your identity. Please visit www.irs.gov/getanippin for further information and resubmit your return with an IP PIN.

Thank you so much for your help!

Oh, that's a much different situation for needing an IP PIN.   Your short initial message made it sound like a routine IP PIN rejection.     This is not an "IP PIN rejection" at all.   It was a "DependentSSN" rejection.  The IP PIN that the error message suggested you get in this situation is actually a new workaround this year for when one has that "Dependent SSN" issue.  That workaround allows the primary taxpayer to efile anyway in spite of the DependentSSN issue.    Now you have to figure out why this error occurred, e.g., if your dependent was claimed on another return (their own?) and correct it.   I'll provide several possibilities below.

The most common situation causing that rejection would be that you claimed a dependent on your return and that dependent also filed their own return and didn't indicate that he/she could be claimed on someone else's return.   Do you have a dependent that you were qualified to claim on your return, but who mistakenly claimed themself as primary on a return that they filed for themself?   If that's the case, then your dependent needs to file an amended return and indicate on it that someone else can claim them on their return to hopefully avoid an IRS letter.

While the above is a common situation in families, if that doesn't explain it, then there are some other things that can cause it, such as you mistyping a SSN for your dependent in the My Info section (you should check to be sure you entered dependent's SSN correctly), or someone else claiming your dependent as "taxpayer or spouse" on another return, or even someone filing a fraudulent return with your dependent's SSN.

Yes. We claimed a dependent on our return and our dependent also filed her return and didn't indicate that she could be claimed on our return. She already filed an amended return and indicated on it that we could claim her on her return.

I am royally pissed! @ INTUIT. In TurboTax Deluxe, I put in both IP PINs and YOU did not save my spouse's IP PIN, SO AGAIN, (2nd time) THE RETURNs (Federal and State) were REJECTED, and I had to pay A THIRD $$$25$$$ State filing FEE. I AM FURIOUS !!! WHEN I RAN CHECK STATUS, BEFORE FILING THE SECOND TIME, IT SAID EVERYTHING WAS CORRECT/OK !!! WRONG !!! ONE OF THE IP PINs WAS NOT RECORDED !!! THIS IS INTUIT's ERROR !!! YOUR SOFTWARE NOW COST ME NOT $80, BUT $155 !!! YOU GOUGED ME.

To others, this is a glitch in TurboTax (that existed in, at least back to 2023, in which I also had to refile). If you want to absolutely avoid fees for refiling because of the glitch, DOUBLE-check the entry. The 1st time, I was prompted for the Personal PIN but Not the IP PIN. After running (1st) "Check your Return for Accuracy", it falsely reported everything was OK, even though the IP PIN was Missing. Therefore, Do Not File the 1st run until you double-check it. (#2) Go to menu > View / Forms / Info Wks / Part VII and check the IP PIN for the 6-digit number you received directly from the IRS via mail or from the website. In order to regenerate the accuracy check, you will need to go through menu > Step-by-Step / State Taxes / Work on States / Done with States / Let's make your taxes are correct / Continue. Finish the prompts to "Good news!" and Do Not Continue to File.  Instead, go back through the routine (#2, above) again. Then you should file, unless it was missing. If it was missing, start over from the beginning and run routine #2 twice more. You can now file. Good luck, as I pray this works for everyone else. David

Sorry you had all that trouble.  This is mainly a user community forum--not a direct route to TurboTax Support.   I don't know if anyone from TurboTax will see your posting, but even if so, nothing account-specific can be handled here.  So see if you can at least get some relief the following way:

Were you charged the state efile fee multiple times due to a rejection?    You should not have to pay the state efile again after a rejection.   You can contact the folks at TurboTax Support and ask them to review your fees, and should hopefully be refunded for any extra state efile fees.

Support hours are 5AM-9PM Pacific, every day this time of year.

my Taxes were rejected by federal because my son inadvertantly claimed himself as a dependent (his first year doing taxes himself). The error from TurboTax was to create a IRS IP PIN, which I did and entered per your instructions (thank you).  I also had my son amend his return and refile with the correct info.  Is that everything I need to do to get my taxes acepted?

Yes,assuming nothing else is wrong with your return; i.e., that you don't get some additional error code when you efile again.   The workaround for that "dependent claimed self" rejection error is new this year.  The IRS allows the first-listed filer (primary filer) on the parent's return to get an IP PIN and resubmit the efile.   This, hopefully, prevents the parent from having to file a paper return by mail.    Anecdotal reports in this forum state that it does work.   And yes, it was correct to have the son amend his return to correctly indicate that someone else can claim him.

Please report back with your results when you find out your efile results.

Excellent writeup. I have been confused about this since 2019. You finally cleared it up for me. Thank you!

Thank you! It would be nice if there was a "jump to" for this. I have wasted so much time this year looking for things in TurboTax that should be a "jump to" or made very apparent. I am not impressed with TurboTax 2024!

THANK YOU THANK YOU!!  NO where does it say that you will need TWO pins!  Why isn't the IP-PIN on the same page as the usual PIN.  I have spent so much time trying to get these taxes filed and FINALLY, you helped me.   Turbo Tax is not what it used to be......I've probably used it for 20 years and this year has been the worst.  Not sure I'll get it next year.  Any suggestions of others?   Again, THANK YOU!  and Happy Easter!
