I filed my daughter's return in April and paid $24.99 and TTax Premier charged me another $24.99 for my return today. There no charges until 2017, then they did charge for each return in 2018 also.
@Psb As I explained to you in another thread, when you use desktop (CD/download) software there is a fee to e-file the state return. The program includes the software to prepare the state return, but there is an extra fee to e-file the state return. You can avoid the state e-file fee if you print, sign and mail the state return instead. And it will charge you EACH time you e-file a state return.
You ran into a rejection problem with your own return and could not e-file so you can request a billing adjustment for your own return.

Note: This has always been the way the fees work for desktop software. There has always been a fee to e-file a state return. It starts out at $19.99 in the beginning of the tax season and increases to $24.99 in March. When you use online software you pay separate fees for the preparation of federal and state returns; e-filing is not a separate fee for online software. But if you do the math, you will see that it is still more cost effective to use desktop software when you prepare and file multiple returns.
I agree with the comments of several others, that state TurboTax misled us with false advertising. I will be reporting this incident to my State Better Business Bureau and state and federal representatives, and will not use your product ever again.
I agree it always used to be one free state efile- I will not use turbo tax next year. Sad, since I had used it for so long.

I agree it can be confusing. What is "free" is the state program download to prepare as many state returns as one needs of that same state. However, efiling of each state return is $20 (increases to $25 in March). There is no state efile fee for New York state, and no fee to print and mail the state returns. It has been that way for many years. This is always a common question every year.
I used TT Deluxe to efile my 2019 State Taxes. I received a copy of it staying that TT collected the efile fee, TT had processed them and I didn't need to file them via regular mail. To my surprise, when I am trying to file my 2020 taxes, CA Franchise Tax Board informed me that they NEVER received my 2019 State Taxes from TT. I need to talk with a TT representative to know why this happened, and TT filed them IMMEDIATELY and also pay for all penalties. I have NEVER be late filing my taxes every year. I trusted TT when I am filing my taxes. I have tried to call the TT customer service but the robot call is misleading my requests and I have to wait for a long time. When finally someone answered my call, the representative hang up or put me on hold and then hang up. MAY SOMEONE FROM TT CONTACT ME TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM YOU CREATED WITH MY STATE TAXES? THANKS.

Keep in mind, if you did not actually download the California state return into your software, it was never prepared.

Pure greed on the part of Intuit. They haven't been loyal customer friendly since that got to big for their breeches.
RIP OFF!! I paid $50 for the 2020 CD. How can you justify charging $25 to efile my CA return when CA charges 0 to efile? I will NEVER use TurboTax again. Screw you and the horse you rode in on.
Its not even recognizing that I have a free state tax download...wants to charge me $45. I purchased TurboTax deluxe and upgraded to premier. What's going on with Intuit that 1) it does not recognize a leading zero for SSNs and, 2)now wants to charge me for a free state download.
@drvccv You get to prepare 1 free state return, but you are charged to e-file your state return. There is, however, no charge to print and mail your state return. Please go to the TurboTax website for the desktop editions and click on the link 1 state download. Then scroll down to have the fees explained. https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/cd-download/
The charge for filing ,what I thought was a free state filing, happened to me this year. Dont remember having this charge last few years. I did 3 fed and state returns. 75.00 total. Seems a bit much. Think I will search for new filing source next year.

When using the TurboTax desktop CD/Download editions there has Always been an e-file charge for each state tax return e-filed.
The charge is $25 when e-filing the state return after the end of February. The charge is $20 if e-filed before the end of February.
The e-file charge for a state tax return can be avoided by printing and mailing the state tax returns.
