Official COVID-19 (Coronavirus) and extension thread

Do not use turbo tax use H&R trust me.

Official COVID-19 (Coronavirus) and extension thread

Better yet, urge your congressperson to create legislation for free IRS filings without using a corporation.

Its 2020, they did this for a short period 20 years ago. Until Turbo Tax, H&R Block and others lobbied for a contract that says the IRS cannot created their own free filing system. Why do we need to share our most personal information with a third (and who knows how many others) party to file our returns. Its ridiculous!

"Hang in there" doesn't pay the bills. My return is over 30 days late from the 21 days Turbo Tax estimated it would take. I haven't gotten a stimulus payment either. Neither Turbo Tax or the IRS want to talk to citizens/customers but something is obviously wrong here.

Yes something is wrong.  There is a pandemic that has affected nearly every aspect of life, including how fast the IRS can work.

Waiting is frustrating—refunds are taking longer in many cases.  These are not normal times.  It is not possible for TurboTax to speed up the IRS for you.  It seems to be taking longer than usual for them to process returns.  They are short staffed; and they are processing millions of tax returns at the same time that they have been burdened with the task of processing millions of stimulus checks.  The IRS is not taking calls right now.

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer.

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 20 of your Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

To track your state refund:

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899433-how-do-i-track-my-state-refund

On the IRS site you are also offered the use of an app called IRS2Go

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1901548-why-do-some-refunds-take-longer-than-others

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

Act by Wednesday for chance to get quicker Economic Impact Payment; timeline for payments continues to accelerate

WASHINGTON – With a variety of steps underway to speed Economic Impact Payments, the Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service urged people to use Get My Payment by noon Wednesday, May 13, for a chance to get a quicker delivery.

The IRS, working in partnership with Treasury Department and the Bureau of Fiscal Services (BFS), continues to accelerate work to get Economic Impact Payments to even more people as soon as possible. Approximately 130 million individuals have already received payments worth more than $200 billion in the program’s first four weeks.

Starting later this month, the number of paper checks being delivered to taxpayers will sharply increase. For many taxpayers, the last chance to obtain a direct deposit of their Economic Impact Payment rather than receive a paper check is coming soon. People should visit Get My Payment on IRS.gov by noon Wednesday, May 13, to check on their payment status and, when available, provide their direct deposit information.

“We’re working hard to get more payments quickly to taxpayers,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “We want people to visit Get My Payment before the noon Wednesday deadline so they can provide their direct deposit information. Time is running out for a chance to get these payments several weeks earlier through direct deposit.”

After noon Wednesday, the IRS will begin preparing millions of files to send to BFS for paper checks that will begin arriving through late May and into June. Taxpayers who use Get My Payment before that cut-off can still take advantage of entering direct deposit information.

How Get My Payment works
The Get My Payment tool provides eligible taxpayers with a projected Economic Impact Payment deposit date. The information is updated once daily, usually overnight. There is no need to check more than once a day. Taxpayers who did not choose direct deposit on their last tax return can use this tool to input bank account information to receive their payment by direct deposit, expediting receipt.

Non-Filers portal remains available
For those not required to file a federal tax return, the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here tool helps them submit basic information to receive an Economic Impact Payment quickly to their bank account. Developed in partnership between the IRS and the Free File Alliance, this tool provides a free and easy option for those who don’t receive Social Security retirement, survivor or disability benefits (SSDI), Railroad Retirement benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and VA Compensation and Pension (C&P) benefits. The Non-filers tool is also available in Spanish.

Eligible taxpayers who filed tax returns for 2019 or 2018 will receive the payments automatically. Automatic payments will also be sent to those receiving Social Security retirement, disability benefits, Railroad Retirement benefits, Veterans Affairs benefits or Supplemental Security Income soon.

Watch out for scams related to Economic Impact Payments
The IRS urges taxpayers to be on the lookout for scams related to the Economic Impact Payments. To use the new app or get information, taxpayers should visit IRS.gov. People should watch out for scams using email, phone calls or texts related to the payments. Be careful and cautious: The IRS will not send unsolicited electronic communications asking people to open attachments, visit a website or share personal or financial information.

Taxpayers should check the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for more information.

Hi,

It’s now mid May and still no stimulus check. I filed my 2019 taxes electronically on 04/13, and the IRS website still displays the message that my “refund is being processed”. Anyone have an  idea why it would take this long? Any help provided is greatly appreciated.

I filed and was accepted back in February. The website says it hasn't processed my return and will update the page with a date. The stimulus says I am eligible and will deposit to my account when a date is available. This has been every day since this all started.  What do I do? When will I get my stimulus or refund? Next year?

To get my stimulus check I used the option to manually enter my 2019 data.  Now that I'm ready to actually file my official return to the Feds it would appear I cannot e-file my return out of Turbo Tax since they see that a return has already been filed with the same SS.  What are my options?  Can I e-file an amended return?  What about the State return?  I was planning to e-file that along with my Fed Return and even paid the e-filing fee.  If I can't email my State return with my Fed return can I get a refund for the fee?  Please provide some guidance.  I'm in TT at the e-file screen, but cannot continue at this time.

the new filing date is July 15th

@mfoster90

If  you used the IRS non-filers website to register for the stimulus and you are not a non-filer and  you are trying to file a REAL 2019 tax return then your ONLY option will be to mail in BOTH the federal and amended returns.  And the fee for the ONLINE program is for the use of the program to complete a return that can be filed even if you end up mailing it in ... there is no extra fee to efile it.

See this TurboTax support FAQ on how to proceed - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-topics/help/stimulus-how-to-file-your-return-after-getting-rej...

There is a fee to e-file a State return, which I have already paid via TT when I thought I was going to be able to e-file both Fed and State.  Since I can't e-file my Fed return that means I can't e-file my State return so I should get a refund for the State-filing fee.

I'll switch the program to mail my return and follow the prompts to make sure I get the right documents to mail in.

how can I file my taxes without being assessed a late file penalty? I updated the forms tried deleting unneeded forms to no avail. Just about done using Tt !

Official COVID-19 (Coronavirus) and extension thread

@mg20079 Today is July 6.  The filing deadline for 2019 is July 15, 2019.  So, first of all, you are not late yet.  You still have over a week to prepare and file your 2019 tax return.  If you are getting a refund there is no penalty for being late, even if you miss the deadline.  You have until October 15, 2020 to e-file.  After that,, e-filing will close and a 2019 return will have to be filed by mail.

However, if you owe tax due, it should be paid by July 15, 2020--or there are late penalties and interest.

If you are having problems preparing your tax return tell us the specific problem(s) you are having so we know how to help.  We cannot see your screen or your tax return.

We cannot tell from your post what version of the software you are using. Are you using online TT or desktop (CD/download) software?  If desktop--what version, and what operating system?
