Tax Year Prior to 2020: Made a mistake on taxes

When you enter your information, TurboTax will choose the best filing status that gives you the biggest tax break. You may qualify as Head of Household If you:

  1. Were unmarried as of December 31 this year and
  2. Paid more than half the cost to run your (or a qualifying parent's) home this year(rent, mortgage, utilities, etc.) and
  3. Supported a qualifying person.

If you already filed your return you need to amend to make any changes.

Wait until your return has been fully processes and you received your refund ( if you are expecting a refund ), then amend your return.

Here's how you amend your return:

  1. Sign in to you account.
  2. Scroll down to Your tax return & documents , select 2019 and then Amend (change) return
  3. Select Amend using TurboTax Online.
  4. follow the instructions, your refund or tax due will change to 0. This is normal on amended returns.

To change your filing status :

  1. Log in to your account.
  2. Go to Personal Info.
  3. On the screen "Let's confirm your marital status", change your filling status.

If you have e-filed your tax return and need to change, add or delete information on the tax return then you will need to wait for the tax return to either be accepted or rejected by the IRS.
If the tax return is rejected then you can make your changes and re-file the tax return.
If the tax return is accepted then you will have to amend the tax return to make your changes. An amended tax return, Form 1040X, can only be printed, signed, dated and mailed by you to the IRS, it cannot be e-filed. The IRS will take up to 4 months to process the amended tax return. Wait until you have received the tax refund or the taxes owed have been paid and processed by the IRS before amending the tax return.

On the Tax Home web page when the Form 1040X for amending a 2019 tax return becomes available there will be a link - Amend (change) return

If you entered incorrect banking information for your refund, you can change it if your return is rejected.  If it is accepted, however, it is too late to change it.  The bank will reject the refund and send it back to the IRS.  Then the IRS will issue a paper check and mail it to the address you put on your tax return.

I forgot to add a W-2 and I already filed my taxes

Tax Year Prior to 2020: Made a mistake on taxes

You cannot change or add anything on the return that you e-filed.  It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox

Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return. If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and add or change it and resend it.

If the IRS accepts your return, then you have to wait until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund or paid the tax due. THEN you can prepare an amended tax return 1040X and mail it in. You cannot e-file an amended return.  Meanwhile, DO NOT change anything on your return until you start the amended return. If you did change or add the missing info then take it out and put your return back to the way it was when you first filed it.

I made a mistake on my withholding amount on my state of Indiana taxes.

If you have already filed your taxes, and you made a mistake on your states withholding, there are several things you can do:

  • You can file an amended return, and correct the error.
  • If you choose not to do that and you owe money, they will figure it out and send you a bill.  There may be interest and penalties on it.
  • If your withholding was more than what you posted, and you don't file an amended return you will not get that money back.

Therefore, I recommend you prepare an amended return.
