You are too late to start a new online return for 2019.  The last day you could have done that was on October  15.

Now the only way to use TurboTax to prepare your 2019 return is to use desktop software downloaded/installed to a full PC or Mac.  (not to a mobile device)..

If you have a computer that meets the system requirement for desktop software contact customer support for a download.

Does this mean I must purchase the software again? It was a free package at the time.

If you paid for one of the 2019 TurboTax online editions contact TurboTax support and they can push a 2019 desktop installation file to your download account at no charge - https://support.turbotax.intuit.com/contact/

Not sure what "free" package you are referring to since we cannot see your account.  But if you were using Free Edition, yes, you now have to pay to use desktop software.  I do not understand "I purchased 2019......but it was a free package at the time."  What does that mean---if it was free you did not purchase anything.  The only way to file a "free" 2019 return now is to prepare the paper forms by hand.

If you want to use the paper forms:

The tax forms for 2019 include a Form 1040 and three possible extra “Schedules”:

If you want to use software:

Online preparation and e-filing for 2017, 2018 and 2019 is permanently closed.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2017, 2018, or 2019 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline.  If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.

It was the free version. Does this mean I will now need to buy an upgraded version?

You would need to purchase one of the 2019 desktop editions to install on your Windows or Mac personal computer to complete the 2019 tax return you started using the TurboTax online editions.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for completing a prior year tax return originally started with the online editions - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/prior-year-return/help/how-do-i-finish-a-prior-year-return-that-i-...

One last question,

When I pay for the software, will it pick up where I left off? I have all my W-2 info uploaded into the forms I don't want to lose that!
