Please explain. Are you using Online TurboTax or desktop TurboTax? If desktop TurboTax, what edition--Basic, Deluxe, etc. If Online, what edition--Free Edition, Deluxe, etc.
I got the paid down load. No disk available this year. I paid for the deluxe with one free state tax but when I filed it charge me $25 to do my State. I have the same problem with it every year you pay for something that you cannot get. As far as I’m concerned, TurboTax owes me the $25.
You could not buy a disc this year I looked all over TurboTax. I had to download one that I purchased deluxe with a free state return. I just filed and was charged $25 to do the state federal was free when I was using TurboTax. It asked if I wanted my free state I said yes and it still charged me $25. TurboTax owes me the $25 is how I feel about it
If you bought a desktop software product that includes 1 state, the "free state" is a state program download to prepare the state return. Each completed state return can be efiled for a $25 efile fee (no fee for NY or WA state), or one can print and mail the state return with no extra fee.
When you use the desktop download software( whether you used a CD or downloaded) there is always a state e--file fee. You get the software to prepare the state return but you pay an extra fee to e-file the state. You can avoid the state e-file fee if you print and mail the state instead of e-filing it.
In the Desktop program you get one free state PROGRAM download to prepare unlimited state returns. Then each state return (including the first one) is $20 to efile, usually goes up to $25 March 1. Or you can print and mail state for free.
I literally just got off the phone with customer service. You HAVE to speak to a supervisor and have them check your product key. It will tell them which product you bought and if it came with the free state file. Last year it happened to me and I got so frustrated I just paid the $25 but this year I fought back and she got me my free file. They use the pay by phone on the app to credit you for the state.
Not true, I have always bought TT from Costco or Amazon and they come with ONE free state e-file.
I have always bought from Costco since the beginning.
Box says Federal Returns & Federal E-File plus State Returns. It does not say state efile is included. It also says on the back of my CD case in the comparison chart....
1 state product via download (print free or efile for $19.99 each) prices subject to change without notice.
And click on 1 state download on Deluxe or above on the Desktop CD/Download page. Then in the pop up box scroll down to the very bottom.

Here’s my Costco from 2020
@suziqt125 There has been a state e-file fee for desktop software for over 25 years. You can avoid the state e-file fee if you print and mail the state. The software included the program to prepare the state return, but there has always been a fee to e-file the state.
I just remembered, the state efile is free for New York. Did you use to live in NY? Or you don’t remember paying the $20/25 fee. Maybe you had the fee deducted from your federal refund so you didn’t remember or see a separate credit card charge for it.
I just spent an hour on the phone with Turbo Tax. I assure you, I know what I'm talking about. When you purchase the software from some retailers they will give you one FREE state e-file. Ive been using TT for decades for my taxes as well as several family members and friends. If you purchase the program for federal and state you can file FIVE returns with it but only the federal is free to file UNLESS you buy the promo version with ONE free state e-file. Which I did. And guess what? I just filed my state for free. Now the other four I will file with that software I will have to pay $25 for but that ONE was free. (I am in California, always have been, never filed with any other state)
I don’t have my free state either. I bought the desktop premier from Costco. The cover says one print free state.
There are a few issues. First, it downloaded California along the updates when I opened it up after the installation. I don’t know why but I didn’t pay attention. But when I finished the federal and started my state (Illinois), it asks me $45 to prepare. I called the support they believed it is California that caused the problem but they didn’t know how to remove it. Second, I reinstalled TT. This time I didn’t update when I launched it. So no California is downloaded. But I am still asked to pay $45 to start the Illinois. This seems a SCAM! Talking to TT tech support was frustrating. They have no idea and ask me to file refund request to TT. I will talk to them again. But if anyone has any idea, please! Appreciate it
