How do I connect with a tax expert in TurboTax Live?
I have not filed taxes for four years until this year. I filed my 2021 taxes with e-file and haven’t got anything back except confirmation that the IRS has gotten my return and I can see that they haven’t even processed it yet. I’m afraid they aren’t processing it because of the four years I haven’t filed so I need to file the other three years which I need to do anyway for good standing with the IRS but I Have lost the documents and nobody seems to issue documents for prior year from the Social Security survivors benefits or PUA. Do you have the means to pull those up or can you tell me how I can pull those up so that I can file those three prior years
@Masterseasel No TurboTax cannot pull up your income documents from the past years. You are going to have to do some legwork or homework and obtain them for yourself.
For Social Security:
HOW TO GET SSA-1099
If you cannot find your SSA1099,you can get one from your nearest Social Security office, or there is a way to go on the Social Security website and request one. Go to www.ssa.gov You have to create an account with a user name and password.
https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/replacement-SSA-1099.html
https://www.ssa.gov/onlineservices/
https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/
For unemployment compensation:
You might need to go to your state’s unemployment website and use the password, etc. that you have been using to certify for weekly benefits to get your 1099G from the state’s site.
For W-2's
You might need to phone, drop in, email and/or snail mail an old employer to make sure they know where to send your W-2.
https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/2561916-how-can-i-get-a-copy-of-my-w-2
Other ways to get W-2’s:
Pay Social Security $90 per W-2:
You can get a wage and income transcript from the IRS: It will not show the actual W-2, 1099’s, etc, but will show the income information the IRS received. It will not, however, show your state information. It will only show the federal information.
https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript
For 1099's
There are over a dozen kinds of 1099's. A 1099NEC is typically issued by an individual or business for whom you performed work as an independent contractor, so seek a copy from them if you did not save yours. Many of the other types of 1099's are issued by banks, brokerages and other financial institutions from which you can seek copies.
Online preparation and e-filing for 2018 and 2019 and 2020 is permanently closed.
To file a return for a prior tax year
If you need to prepare a return for 2018, 2019 or 2020 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign, and mail the return(s)
https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/
You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.
Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
Note: The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac. It cannot be used on a mobile device.
What if I do not file my tax return?

The maximum credit you can receive for a Nonbusiness Energy Property Credit is $500.
IRS Form 5695 Residential Energy Credits instructions page 2 - https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i5695.pdf
When I did turbotax last week, my refund was $1,600; I added dependents I did take care of and the refund was $11,000. I tried to file it and it may be complete. I was hoping for $11,000, why so low?
TurboTax has no way of knowing why your refund is less than on your filed return. Did you print or save a copy of your return so you can review it?
If the IRS adjusted your refund from what you filed, they will send you a letter explaining why.
Possibly your dependents were not allowed or filed incorrectly. Did you file an Amended Return to claim them after you filed your original return?
If so, Amendments can take 12-16 weeks to process so you may receive your additional refund later.
Click this link for more info on Claiming a Dependent.
Here's how you can Check Efile Status.
Both my Federal & State 2021 Tax returns have been rejected numerous times. I have rechecked all detail from my IRS 1040-SR Return.
I do not know what to do now.
HELP
You received an email that we cannot see that tells you why your tax return was rejected.
Some rejected returns can be fixed and re-filed. Some have “un-fixable” reasons for the rejection and have to be mailed instead. What is the rejection code or rejection message?
If it was rejected for AGI—-be aware that many 2020 returns took so long for the IRS to process that your 2020 AGI might not be in the IRS system. Try using zero instead.
If filing with zero is rejected then file again but select the option that you did not file last year. The IRS does not see that question and it will allow you to e-file with no AGI question.

If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.
My refund is 2800.00 short. the IRS states the following reasons.
Social Security number is wrong.
Last name does not match their records.
One or more individuals claimed dependent exceeds the age limit.
Your adjusted gross income exceeds $150,000.
The amount was computed incorrectly.
All of the above issues they state are incorrect, unless I checked a box I shouldn't have.
If your refund is short $2,800 then that is because you said you did not receive the 3rd stimulus payment and the IRS has records that show you were sent the 3rd stimulus payment so they removed the $2,800 Recovery Rebate Credit that was entered on Form 1040 Line 30.
Go to this IRS website for your tax account to see if the 3rd stimulus payment is entered - https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account
If you are Married Filing Jointly also check your spouse's tax account.
If you checked your bank account in the March - May 2021 timeframe and there is not a $2,800 EIP3 payment from the IRS then go to this IRS website for how to start a trace on the payment - https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/questions-and-answers-about-the-third-economic-impact-payment-topic-j-p...
@mspence11 Sounds like a mistake with the 3rd stimulus.
LOTS of people have made mistakes this year with the recovery rebate credit by "forgetting" that they received the $1400 per person stimulus checks last year. They answered no to the questions for the recovery recovery rebate credit and put the $1400 per person on line 30 of their returns. But you cannot get it twice, so the IRS removes it when it is there by mistake.
Try checking your online account with the IRS
https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account
Does the IRS show that you received a $1400 per person stimulus or EIP check in 2021? Did you receive it? When you were asked on your tax return did you say no? Was there $1400 on line 30 of your tax return?
If the IRS says you got $1400 per person last year but you did not receive it you can have it traced.
LOST THIRD STIMULUS CHECK
I can not get an Oklahoma State Corporate return to efile. it keeps getting rejected. I have completed the corrections on page 9, but it is like the software does not recognize the changes and keeps sending the same tax return.
Please follow the instructions here to contact us by phone, so we can look over the return. We do not have access to your return here in this public forum. @sbianchi
