Sounds like you file an extension with $0 taxes due and when you printed it had a balance due.
You cannot amend an extension, unfortunately. The extension is for filing, and since you haven't filed any forms, there is nothing to amend. If you would like to change the income that you put with the extension, it is not necessary.
A tax extension doesn't give you more time to pay taxes you owe. If you owe on taxes and you need to file an extension, you must pay when you file your extension. Otherwise, you'll also have to pay interest and late penalties. So when you file your return if you do not actually owe no problem. If you owe the interest and penalties will start at due date of return because you did not pay with the extension.
Check your return, if you started one. The amounts shown there will automatically transferred to the extension.
i mightve not been as clear as i should have... i put in 3200 tax liability... 5000 paid already.. the web version i was using correctly said i owe no tax..i filed it electronically and then went to print out a copy.. when i printed it out it said 1800 balance due in line 6 of the extension form but 0 is what im paying with the extension... i think there is a major bug in turbo tax.. can u confirm this bug exists?
"i put in 3200 tax liability..." where, on the 4868 (the extension)?
"5000 paid already" - how was this paid already? As withholding?
Looking at the 4868, you are saying that you put $5,000 on line 4 and $3,200 on line 5, so line 6 is $1,200 and line 7 is zero?
Do you have a copy of the 4868? Can you give us a screenshot of it (with any personally identifiable information redacted)?
no - that would be ok
I put in 3200 for estimated tax liability (line 4)
5000 for payments (line 5)
which should be zero due with extension (line 6)
which online said ok you owe no tax and I filed it electronically
but when I went to print it out it showed 1800 due which means in its mind it reversed the numbers
photo of only that part of form attached
Based on what you said the numbers do appear to be reversed. I'm not going to try to figure that out.
Did you pay $5,000 to the IRS at some point already?
If you did and your tax liability is $3,200 there will not be a problem. The IRS is not looking for that money right now. However, when you complete your tax return it will determine if you have a refund or you owe additional taxes. If you do owe additional taxes you may owe penalties and interest.
The extension calculation is a heads up for you to pay off any balance before those penalties and interest grow.
right but the form to print is a massive error !!! and i have no idea what the electronic filing did
Can you tell us what you entered on the various 4868 input screens? Some of them can be confusing.
And did you see the last screen?

i was using the one on the web and i put it exactly what it says on the form 3200 estimated tax owed and 5000 estimated tax paid in 21
the line that is wrong is the 1800 its obvious what the bug in the system is!
Yes, since $5,000 paid minus $3200 owed leaves a refund of $1800 not a balance due. Since you are expecting a refund, you will not have any penalties and interest and no payment is required. The IRS just needs to approve the extension for you to have time to file and get your refund. You have nothing to worry about since the goal was to get an extension on paperwork.
Once done, you have a refund so no payment is necessary and the IRS will not be asking you for it. They will patiently wait for your return.
not a great answer kind of a cop out but if you tell me i shouldnt worry then i wont
Agree tatty613...I had the EXACT same issue. Not at ALL comfortable or NOT worried that this form has a major bug. No one addressed your concerns. Did you get confirmation IRS accepted your extension? Thanks for trying to get an answer on this obvious BUG. There are other questions on the exact same topic and no sufficient answer.
spoke to an accountant this morning and he said you dont need confirmation of receiving from the IRS
If you add an extension to a tax return that shows a balance due, the balance due shifts to the extension form and the return will show no balance due because the assumption is that you have made the payment on the 4868 form.
Whether you owe or not, the important thing is that the extension gets filed on time and if you do owe, you pay pay on or before the due date of April 18 (may be later for state returns).
If you don't really owe any tax, but you file a 4868 that says you do, that doesn't cause any problems. Tax can only be assessed based on a tax return or information that the IRS gets from third parties, like banks and employers.
sorry should have been clearer - i owe no tax
though turbotax should acknowledge and correct this eggregious bug!
