Please follow these steps to remove a dependent in TurboTax:

  • In your return, click on Personal Info tab
  • Your Personal Info Summary will display
  • On the Personal Info Summary screen, your dependents are listed just below your filing status
  • Click on the Delete button for the dependent which you wish to delete
  • A pop-up box will display, asking whether you wish to delete the dependent – click the Yes button to delete the dependent
  • Click on Done button
  • When you return to the Personal Info Summary page, the removed dependent will no longer display

Can this be done after you have filed already? I'm needing to amend.

No, you cannot remove your dependent if you have already filed your tax return. You will need to wait until your return is either accepted or rejected by the IRS.

If your return is accepted, you will need to file an amended return to remove the dependent. You will be able to amend your return starting 02/20/2020. Once this option is available, please follow these steps:

  1. Log into TurboTax and click on "Tax Home"
  2. Scroll down to Your tax return & documents (you may need to select Show)
  3. Select 2019 and then Amend (change) return
  4. Select Amend using TurboTax Online
  5. Follow the steps posted by JohnR1 in the above message to remove the dependent.

If your return is rejectedonce you have correct the rejection error, you can update your tax return to remove your dependent before filing your return again.

If you need to revisit the Dependents section in TurboTax Online, here's what you do:

  1. Open or continue your return in TurboTax, if you aren't already in it.
  2. Select My Info in the left navigation.
  3. Select the Add a dependent button if you need to add someone. Select the trash can icon next to the name of a dependent to remove them (we'll ask you to confirm removing them before we take them off your return).

My Federal tax return has accepted, my CA tax return shows "Printed".

I need to amend CA state because im getting a message states that Dependent's Soc Num is a duplicate Social Security Number.

Part IV ' Dependent Information shows duplicate the name. How can I remove the duplicate name from Part IV ' Dependent Information if the  CA file has been printed?

It depends.

Did you already file your state return?  If so, then you would amend it.

But if you have not filed your state return yet, you will need to go into the state interview section to ensure you have not entered your dependent again.  It should pull in from your input in the federal section of the program.

If someone is claiming you as a dependent on their tax return all you can do is ask that they remove you as a dependent.  You cannot take yourself off of someone else's tax return.

That is outrageous, ..what if that person added you without your knowledge, ..there should be a way to have it removed ,...is the IRS wanted money from you, they would act immediately, ..but we have no rights it seems when it comes to our needs .

How do I remove a dependent on my 2020 tax return if I've already filed and IRS has accepted it. Also, I itemize my deductions,

You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it.  It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner.

If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.”  The changes will go nowhere.

Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return.  If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.

If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund.  THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail  it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally.  You will need to use a form called a 1040X.

Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself.  Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed
