@wjs28ul The Form 1040 and Form 1040SR are identical except that the 1040SR has bigger print. It is used automatically by the software if the date of birth you enter shows that you are 65 or older.
I logged in today to file my 2022 federal and state tax return, but I didn't see the 1040SR tax form. I have a simple return with pension and social security and don't want to be taxed 100% on social security income. So far, I can't continue because there is no way to get the totals correct. In tax year 2021 I used the 1040Sr form and things turned out well.
If you (or your spouse) are 65 or older you automatically get the 1040SR. It is the same as the regular 1040 just larger type so it is on 3 pages instead of 2. When you efile the form doesn’t get sent just the data. It only shows up if you download or print your return.
When you print it will print on the 1040SR even if you see only the 1040 on the screen. You automatically get the 1040SR if you or your spouse is 65 or older. In the Desktop program you can tell it which one to print.
And SS is never 100% taxable. The 1040SR uses the same calculations as the regular 1040. Up to 85% of Social Security becomes taxable when all your other income plus 1/2 your social security, reaches:
Married Filing Jointly: $32,000
Single or head of household: $25,000
Married Filing Separately: 0
If you are looking at a summary screen or review screen those show the full amount as income and lump a lot of stuff together. You need to check the actual 1040 form and make sure it's right. Before filing you can preview the 1040 or print the whole return

Form 1040-SR is completed by seniors. After you enter your date of birth, this form will automatically complete with the information you complete.

Would you clarify what you need help with?
All you posted here was "Help." We cannot see your tax return or your screen. We can help but tell us what the problem is. We cannot guess.

What is your question about the Form 1040-SR? The Form 1040-SR is the same as a standard Form 1040 but with larger print. All the lines and data entries are the same. Due to the larger print, the Form 1040-SR is 3 pages long instead of the Form 1040's 2 pages. The Form 1040-SR is simply the "Large Print Edition."
Online TurboTax defaults to Form 1040-SR for all seniors 65 and older, while in the desktop software one can choose to use regular Form 1040 instead of Form 1040-SR, if desired.
When will I see and where will I find the Form 1040? Turbo tax is asking for information I don't have because I don't have a 1040. Thanks

A Form 1040 and 1040-SR have the same information. The latter just has larger font for older eyes.
Are you using Online TurboTax or desktop software? The 2025 Form 1040 is what is being prepared in the background. It is the main form of the tax return itself. The Form 1040 is what you are preparing when you work on your 2025 return. If you are in Online TurboTax, we can tell you how to preview the 2025 Form 1040. Or if you are in desktop software you can view it in Forms Mode. Or is it asking something about last year's 2024 Form 1040?
What is the program asking you for in regard to a Form 1040?
Thank you for responding. I did file for an extension and it was approved.
I am working on a desktop and in the section “Sales Tax Deduction Calculator”. Under Income and it’s asking to “Enter your adjusted gross income for 2025” and says it’s shown on my 1040, “Adjusted Gross Income” line.
I don’t have a 1040 form.
You mentioned something about looking at forms. How and where would I find these?
Thank you in advance for your help.
If you prepared a tax return last year it is on a Form 1040---or if you were 65 or older---on Form 1040SR. Those tax forms are identical except that 1040SR has bigger print. Anyone who prepared a federal income tax return has one of those forms----so look in your account. Form 1040 is the form you send to the IRS when you file a federal tax return.
If you are trying to find your 2024 AGI it is shown on line 11 of the tax form. If you filed a joint return with a spouse, that amount is the same for each of you. If you are looking for your 2025 AGI----look at line 11----that shows your 2025 AGI (Adjusted Gross Income)
If you used desktop download software, the tax file is stored on your own hard drive. You can print the return, or just look at it by clicking from "Easy Step" to "Forms" mode to look at any of the forms or schedules.
Online software does not have "forms" mode. If you used online software, you will need to find your return in the account you used:
Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them. Log out of the account you are in now.
