Either e-file the federal tax return or print and mail the federal tax return.

Click on File, complete Step 1 and Step 2.  On Step 3 choose how to file the tax return.

TurboTax will automatically prepare Form 1040-SR for taxpayers 65 or older and has the same information as Form 1040.  Form 1040-SR prints with a larger size type for easier reading.

Yes Turbo Tax automatically gives you the 1040SR if you are 65 and older.  No difference except the SR for Seniors is bigger font.

Thanks.

An IRS Form 1040-SR and Form 1040 are exactly the same form so there is no difference when filing.

However, it is important to use the SR because it gives you the higher standard deduction of $14, 250, according to my understanding.

You simply enter the information as you would for any other return.   There is really nothing different between the forms other than print size.

The main reason to use Form 1040-SR is if you're filling out your tax return by hand rather than online. Form 1040-SR has larger type and larger boxes to write numbers in, making it slightly easier for seniors to read and fill out.

Form 1040-SR is available as an optional alternative to using Form 1040 for taxpayers who are age 65 or older. Form 1040-SR uses the same schedules and instructions as Form 1040 does.

Congress required the IRS to develop a tax form for seniors in the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018. The idea was to make it easier for seniors with simple tax situations to file their tax returns.

As a result, the IRS created a version of Form 1040 that uses larger print and includes a standard deduction table directly on the for so that seniors can quickly look up their standard deduction amounts. Form 1040-SR uses the same line items and instructions as the standard Form 1040.

@floratom1978 - did you paper file and not sign the return? since it is a reject, just print, sign and attached the W-2, etc again.... and then mail.. figure it'll be 6-9 months until it is processed given the IRS backlogs.

@floratom1978 Do you mean that the IRS sent your return back to you because you did not sign it?   Then get a blue or black pen out and sign it on page 2 next to the words "Sign here" and put it in an envelope again and mail it.  When you file a tax return by mail you are required to sign it in ink.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

And...since mailed returns are taking a long time, expect it to take six to nine months to be processed.

Or switch to e-file and e-file it.

@wjs28ul The Form 1040 and Form 1040SR are identical except that the 1040SR has bigger print.  It is used automatically by the software if the date of  birth you enter  shows that you are 65 or older.

Form 1040-SR is completed by seniors.  After you enter your date of birth, this form will automatically complete with the information you complete.

What is your question about the Form 1040-SR?   The Form 1040-SR is the same as a standard Form 1040 but with larger print.   All the lines and data entries are the same.   Due to the larger print, the Form 1040-SR is 3 pages long instead of the Form 1040's 2 pages.    The Form 1040-SR is simply the "Large Print Edition."

Online TurboTax defaults to Form 1040-SR for all seniors 65 and older, while in the desktop software one can choose to use regular Form 1040 instead of Form 1040-SR, if desired.
