Help with refiling 2019 and 2020 taxes

Hi Bellaf81,

If your initial tax returns were prepared by TurboTax Full Service Experts then having a TurboTax Full Service Tax Expert prepare amended returns to address any errors and omissions is a viable option, however, if your original returns were not prepared by TurboTax's Full Service Experts then 2019 and 2020 amendments would be out of scope for the Full Service Experts.  Another option may be to visit a local accountant or tax preparer, in your area, to have them prepare and submit any needed corrections/amendments.

Hope that helps & good luck getting this taken care of.

To access your prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and on the section Your tax returns & documents click on Show.  Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)

If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created.  TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.

Or go to this IRS website for free federal tax return transcripts - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

For a fee of $43 you can get a complete federal tax return from the IRS by completing Form 4506 - http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf

Hi 20805Joyce,

If a transcript will help, please see the info below:

You can get a copy for the current tax year and as far back as six years from the IRS.

It takes approximately 75 days to process a request for a copy of a filed tax return and the fee per copy is $50.
However, if all you need is a tax transcript, you get one from the IRS for free. A tax
transcript summarizes return information and includes adjusted gross income (AGI). In
most cases, a transcript has all the tax information you need.

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-utl/oc-transcriptorcopyofreturn.pdf

You can get various Form 1040-series transcript types online or by mail.

Request Online What You Need

To register and use this service, you need:

  • your SSN, date of birth, filing status and mailing address from latest tax return,
  • access to your email account,
  • your personal account number from a credit card, mortgage, home equity loan, home equity line of credit or car loan, and
  • a mobile phone linked to your name (for faster registration) or ability to receive an activation code by mail.

What You Get

  • All transcript types are available online
  • View, print or download your transcript
  • Username and password to return later

See this TurboTax support FAQ for correcting the 2019 AGI when using the online editions - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/agi/help/where-do-i-correct-my-agi-in-turbotax-online/01/26311

The 2019 AGI is shown on your 2019 federal tax return, Form 1040 Line 8b

If you are entering the correct 2019 AGI and the IRS continues to reject the 2020 tax return then enter a 0 (zero) for the 2019 AGI and e-file the 2020 tax return again.

Help with refiling 2019 and 2020 taxes

Hi Granny11311,

You might consider electronically re-filing your 2020 tax returns first because you can use the IRS Special Instructions to Validate Your 2020 Electronic Tax Return which are:

If your 2019 tax return has not yet been processed, enter $0 (zero dollars) for your prior year adjusted gross income (AGI).  For more info see the IRS instructions at:

https://www.irs.gov/individuals/electronic-filing-pin-request

To refile your 2019 tax returns, electronically, you'll need the AGI from your 2018 tax returns and you can find the 2018 AGI on Line 7 on Form 1040 (on tax year 2018 form)  For more info, see the article at:

 https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/irs-tax-return/how-to-find-your-adju[product key removed]e-agi-...

Hope that helps,

Ron

Help with refiling 2019 and 2020 taxes

@rgreenfield11 Your advice to another user to e-file a 2019 return is incorrect.   E-filing for 2019 returns has been closed permanently since October 15, 2020.   Only some professional paid  preparers have the ability to e-file a 2019 return.   The only way for a TurboTax user to file a 2019 return is by mail.   Only a 2020 return can be e-filed now---until October 15, 2021.   After that, e-filing for 2020 returns will shut down and 2020 returns will have to be filed by mail.
